A few unanswered questions about Reed

Hi!

  1. Mount Holyoke or Reed? Yes yes. I know the whole Reed is for intellectuals but realistically speaking, should one go to Reed which is in the much isolated and slightly economically backward state or should one go to Mount Holyoke where one can get a greater experience through the 5 college consortium, can network more successfully, can be more successful with employment, can transfer or attend graduate schools like Harvard and pay instate tuition? Also keeping in mind the fact that it doesn’t matter where you do your undergrad from and the fact that both Reed and Mount Holyoke are very recognized with graduate schools and are great schools on their own. (Also someone please clarify if domestic students can get to pay less - in state tuition - if they go to graduate schools or do they even have to take out loans?)
  2. If one wants to branch out in the medical field and wants to, let’s say, attend Harvard Med School then is staying within the Massachusetts area more beneficial (attending MHolyoke) in terms of in state tuition or does it not matter and one should go to Reed because it has a great science program?

Are you planning on doing the honors degree at Holyoke?
If you are interested in study abroad, it is easier to do at Holyoke than at Reed, although I’ve heard Reedies say " now that I’ve gotten here, why would I want to leave?"

Harvard is not a public institution and does not charge differential in-state tuition. Same with Reed and Mt Holyoke.

Every Reedie must write a master-level thesis, creating a research atmosphere, and so grad schools know you know how to research and write about it. It’s why Reed’s per capita PhD admission rate is up there with Swarthmore and UChicago.

‘can transfer or attend graduate schools like Harvard and pay instate tuition’

  1. Your odds of doing that through Reed are the same or better. You get fully funded if you go for a PhD program.

  2. No being in mass does not necessarily help.

Like, if you are set on going to med school and are deciding between Mount Holyoke and Reed, go to Mount Holyoke. You will have a great GPA at MHC if you work hard. At Reed, you have to work harder to get the same GPA simply because the standards are higher. In any case, I have heard only good things about MHC’s science program.

That is all. It seems as though you want to go to MHC. I will point out that you will be going to an isolated location, so it may be difficult to get the same opportunities as a kid who goes to Emerson, which is in the middle of Boston. Reed is in Portland. Seattle is three hours away. The bay area is a day trip away.
