A foster kid's journey into the world of college admissions...

Background: I am a white male from South Carolina. My mother was a high school drop out who was a bartender (I do not know my father). I was born in Miami, Florida. We moved to SC during the third grade because of the dramatic rise in living costs.

Now, my mother and I weren’t exactly well off in Miami. But in SC we fell onto hard times. Hard enough that we were evicted from our tiny little shack in SC and were made homeless. My mother fell into a depression and was deemed mentally unfit to raise me; and so, in my fourth grade year, I moved in with my large extended family in a small farmhouse in the boonies.

As a child, I was quiet and diminutive and was sort of an outcast from my family. My younger self usually left the madness inside to enter the quiet of the woods outside. With no kids around to talk to, I usually played imaginary battles or laid in an old hammock in the backyard and read my old fifth grade history textbook. That book was the start of my love for history. I read of heroes who chased their dreams. They inspired me to dream of leaving home and going forth into the world to achieve my ambitions and inspire others They were too busy watching TV, smoking stuff, or doing nothing to care for me effectively. So, after a year, I was taken away from my family and made a ward of the state.

I was a ward for three years until my mother finally proved to the courts that she could raise me competently. At the beginning of my eighth grade year. we moved to Tennessee right out of my first day out of the System. We fell on hard times again and we were made homeless once again in the middle of my eighth grade year. In the summer before my ninth grade year, my mother made a hard decision and sent me back to SC to live with a foster parent. And that’s where I’ve been ever since!

Throughout high school, I have realized my passion for community service and history. I desire to serve and inspire others. I want to be the person my family WANTED to be, but never TRIED to be. Though none of them have ever went to college, I want to be the one who makes a difference and go do it. And I want to do it through my love for history. Whether its through self-study or taking classes, I desire to hone and chase my great passion through higher education.

You already have chances threads so I think you’re posting so you can let everyone know how it came out, when it does? I bookmarked the thread, I’d like to know. Good luck!

Update: I had my Brown interview a week ago. It went very well! He said he liked my initiative and “nerdism.”

I had my Dartmouth interview today. It went alright, though not as well as the last interview.

@OHMomof2 To be honest, I’ve realized how eh chance threads are. I kind of posted them because I was insecure about my GPA/SAT and also wanted a valid way of telling whether I should apply to these big schools. I’m done with chance threads at this point. So now that I’ve applied, I’m going to continue my story through this thread, rather than making a thousand threads about it.

I think you’ll have a hard time choosing in May, personally.

@OHMomof2 thanks! Even if I don’t get into any of these schools I’ll be amazingly happy going to USC Honors. It’s an awesome program. Actually, there’s a funny story about my applying to a lot of schools.

Originally USC Honors WAS my reach school, and the only one I applied to. My best friend, who runs track with me, asked me what colleges I was applying to. When I told him, he was surprised I was only applying to three schools, all of them in-state. Playfully offended, I asked him where HE was applying to, to which he said MIT. Shocked, I asked him why considering how hard it was to get in. To which he told me something I would never forget.

“I’ll have no chance if I don’t apply.”

That changed everything for me. I held myself back with my doubts about my GPA/SAT/class rank, etc. But I realized what set me apart from everyone else: My story and ECs! So, during November and December, I worked like a madman writing essays, asking for recs, and getting everything ready. My application fee waivers also helped too :p.

But yeah, that’s why I’m applying to these great colleges. And if it weren’t for my best friend (who is brilliant by the way) encouraging me to reach above my limits, I wouldn’t have done what I have done.

Sounds like you’ve already “won” with an early option that you love and can afford. My d is at one of your schools and if you’d like to pm any questions I’d be glad to try to help.

@OHMomof2 Thanks a lot!! I’ll definitely do that at some point tomorrow!

I also think you’ll have a very hard time choosing in May. I read about this one girl who had much lower stats than you who wrote her essays about having a Dad in prison and got into Stanford with a 3.8/1880. I think your situation might actually top that and your stats are more competitive.

Enjoy your Senior year, the admissions will come pouring in soon enough. If there’s one kid that could use some senioritis, it’s you.

After reading your original post I would guess that your essays are dynamite. Are you planning on coming back to this list to give your results? If yes I will bookmark just to see.

There are some great scholarships and grants for children that have been in foster care, I hope you have someone helping you. Good luck!

I’m following too - hope you report back!

@LKnomad @SouthFloridaMom9 Yes I am! In fact, my Clemson admissions notification will hopefully come around February 15th. I’ll be posting in this thread for updates/questions/vents/anything

Best of luck to you, ASJU9511! You seem like an incredible, level-headed young man. Congrats on your admission to the honors college at USoCarolina! I hope you have even more good news coming soon

I forgot to mention. Williams and Amherst are the ones I REALLY want to go to. They’re at the top of my list.

@mademoiselle2308 thanks a ton for your encouraging words!

I feel like Amherst will be into you, I hope so anyway.

@OHMomof2 I love Amherst and Williams. I really appreciate the emphasis on undergrad studies. I heard the professors really care about their students’ education. I love how it’s small, rural, and very close knit. Plus, those particular colleges are excellent feeder schools for top grad schools.

I’ve heard that both schools especially love first gen students, more so than even other top colleges/universities for some reason. I’m hoping that will give me a little push at least.

I think it is a tip at both, though at Amherst they are additionally “need affirmative”, so perhaps a greater tip there.

I will follow this thread too.
Your writing is compelling and I’m sure it’ll take you far.
Congratulations on getting into one of the best and most selective Honors colleges in the country.
I’m sure you’ll get quite a few choices - I thank your friend for opening your eyes to what’s out there for you and allowing you to dream bigger, because you deserved to give yourself that chance.

@OHMomof2 And thank goodness for that!

@MYOS1634 I’m super happy for having him as my friend. Brilliant guy. He’s 2nd in our class. Wants to go into physics. He just got accepted to GTech EA and Clemson. He still needs to hear from Duke and MIT. We’re hoping the best for each other!

I know! I’m super blessed for getting in!!!

Just had my Cornell interview! I think it went SUPER well! I had it over the phone and the guy was actually from the ILR school, the one I’m applying to. He was definitely the most down to earth interviewer I’ve met. Probably due to his age (class of 2014).
