A is for Admission - Should I Buy This Book?

Hey guys,

As a rising senior, I am finally ready for the college admissions process, but I need some kind of guide to help me get there. I read the reviews for this book on Amazon, which said it was amazing? Does this book give a detailed stepbystep guide for everything I need to do?

Also, what is a good book of sample college application essays?

Yes.

Harry Bauld's book.

did you buy it and it gave you positive results?

There was a thread on the parents forum where they discussed the book and Michelle Hernandez (who used to post on CC) actually chimed in to answer some questions.

Hope this helps

other admission's book threads

a really great thread that prompted a lot of discussions by the parents and gave a lot of useful information was:

My dinner with an admissions officer:

I read a lot of books on admissions and I think it is the best. No nonsense, just information.

i didnt really find it helpful although i didnt find any of the three books I bought on college admissions helpful -- the same stuff you hear from college councelors

It's a good book, but I recommend Acing the College Application for us rising seniors. A for Admissions is general stuff, and it's almost too late for us to go about improving ECs and scores and grades, which is what A for Admissions is most geared toward.

buy my book:
B is for Bull5h!t

*they smartened up w/ censors, what a world we live in, what happened to the freedom of speech?

Sure, publish it first. :)

I wouldn't bother. As far as I could tell:

A is for Antiquated

The book's info seemed out of date to me, like it was from a kinder, gentler time than today's uber intense admissions world.

The data is a little outdated, but most of the strategy can still be applied.

Still, I don't think it ultimately helps that much. Applicants these days need to stop worrying so much about strategy. It's like the old saying "if you had spend as much time studying as you did cheating, you would have gotten an A."

Now of course I'm not in any way comparing admissions strategizing to cheating. I just wanted to make the point that I believe that strategizing will only take you so far (which is not very) so people should stop worrying so much about it. It's probably not going to affect any decisions for most people.

My crazy Asian mom bought it for me a few years ago. All that stuff you can find in that book, you can probably find on CC. Maybe spend an hour or two at Barnes and Noble flipping through it, but I don't think there's anything groundbreaking. As others said, it's a little dated.
