A loan for living and not tuition

I support myself financially. I pay rent on top of car payments and other misc. bills. Basically my parents do not pay for anything and I do not live with them. I work full time.

If I go to UCSB in 2011, I will have to work part time. It is a higher paying office job and that will cover my bills but I will need an additional $500 a month for everyday living expenses, like groceries and gas.

Does anyone know if there are loans out there that will send you a check for a set amount of money each quarter? I know two people who get checks for $800-$1300 a quarter, and they can spend it on anything they want. I will probably take out a loan for tuition but I will also need some kind of financial aid for my living situation.

Any tips/insight/experiences would be much appreciated.

private loans give you a check, and some don’t even require you “verifying” your school. I know that there are some federal loans that can also issue a check, but it’s a much more complicated process. You have to speak with your financial aid counselor. Also complete your FAFSA if you haven’t already.

You can appeal fin aid. Schools have a budget for instance here at Berkeley if our rent is more than 750 we can appeal and they will increase loans, work study or grants. This also works for flights home every year and moving expenses. Basically I just try to write everything off at the beginning of the year and they adjust my fin aid accordingly.

I have tried to appeal that my parents do not help with money, but thats not a valid reason.
