A&M vs. Baylor

I've applied to both Baylor and A&M. I've only been accepted by Baylor, but still I'd like to know which one is more popular and why, because I'm from New York, so the only information I can get is from the schools' websites. I know Baylor has a religious affiliation, but I've heard that A&M is ultra conservative. Which is more conservative (I'm super liberal)? I also know that A&M has a co-op program, which Baylor doesn't, so is it easier to get a job out of A&M? By the way, I also intend to go to gradschool, so will that even matter? Also, I'm not concerned with the dorms at A&M, but I don't think Baylor allows freshmen to live in coed buildings anymore if they ever did at all (the website doesn't really clarify); can anyone verify/refute this?

Baylor requires two semesters of religion class (I remember because I applied and was accepted there a few years back). IMHO, Baylor is more conservative than A&M with their religious affiliation and it being a private school. The public school aspect allows A&M to accept a wider array of students as it's cheaper and larger. Baylor also seems to have a larger percentage of greek students (vs the whole student body) than A&M does, and their greeks are very "preppy". I'm not sure if that's what you want or not. As for jobs, it depends on what your major is. Around Texas, either schools will give you great opportunities for jobs. Outside of Texas, I'd say A&M easily trumps Baylor in most if not all majors. As for grad school, again, both depend on the major but both will give you good chances. A&M does have an excellent co-op program that I'm looking to get involved in for next fall.

As for popularity, I'd say A&M is definitely more popular. Maybe because of the traditions/school spirit, maybe because of higher academic prestige, maybe b/c the overall college experience is seen as better... I'm not sure. Baylor is definitely a nice school with excellent facilities though. I probably would have given it more of a consideration had it not been considerably more expensive than my other choices (A&M and UT). A&M has a nice deal that applies to you (out of state student) that if you receive atleast a 1k scholarship from A&M, they'll offer you in-state tuition... that's hard to beat for someone in your situation. I want to say Baylor may have something similar.

if you can afford baylor, then you'll probably fit in as a student there...

preppy and new york go hand in hand (especially if you're from long island)

TAMU will have better students but because it is a state uni it will also have lower caliber students...but if you're good you should thrive...

TAMU is better if you were considering a more urban college and want to learn a lot more about texas culture...baylor is small and gives you that liberal arts college feeling but it's very elitist and for students who couldnt get into a tier1 school...

I dont see whats so great about baylor. I know plenty of people from my high school who got in with some nice scholarships who were dumber than rocks. Unless your doing pre-med, I wouldnt go there. If you have the money, you'll get in. They are also very generous with scholarships.

Baylor is very elitist? Really? I had no clue that someone could consider a school very elitist, but not consider the same school as "tier 1". BTW, those students whom go to Baylor are in a "tier 1 school":

Baylor University - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report

And nearly every "small LAC" has under 3000 students, Baylor has 13,000 students... Not quite your small LAC feeling.

Just thought I'd clarify on some parts that you were very wrong about.

ok i was wrong...baylor is still elitist and is a safety school for those kids who never want to go public but couldnt get into a top 20 (my idea of tier 1) private school...

baylor is small compared to every other popular college in texas except maybe rice (the elite school in tx)

It is very easy to get into Baylor - how can a school be elitist if just about anyone can get in?

My older daughter, who is pretty much a free thinker, turned down a nearly full ride at A&M and accepted a 50% scholarship to Baylor. She went there one year and didn't like it; she said that as a non-evangelical she didn't feel accepted. She transferred to A&M for her sophomore year and, of course, lost all her scholarships in the process. But she loved A&M (PMOTFTACO '08). Yes, there are conservative people there but she found plenty of like-minded people as well. Even more important, she found that Aggies are accepted as Aggies and that, for the most part, politics is just a subject you can talk about or not, your choice.

Frankly, I liked the Baylor campus better. Very pretty campus. But even with the 50% scholarship the place was going to bankrupt me.

My younger daughter is at A&M now. She is just as political (if not more so) and she also loves TAMU.

My daughters' experiences likely do not accurately reflect the wide variety of people, groups or experiences available at either school.

Baylor has a 51% acceptance rate. Obviously not everyone can get in. But I do agree with your point.

I don't think anyone in my large high school was ever turned down by Baylor. It is not difficult to get into. For some strange reason, all my Baylor friends HATE A&M and are always putting it down. Not very Christian to me...

For some strange reason, everyone in this state who doesn't like/go to A&M, hates A&M. Doesn't seem to be much middle ground. I believe it's just all jealousy.

I have friends in Engineering at Baylor and their curriculum is nowhere near as difficult as mine. Not as heavy math/science right away. They take a lot more fluff.

From an OOS perspective, everyone I know is very impressed that my S is going to A&M. It has a very good reputation.

baylor is not elitist b/c of it's admission rate...

but because it costs about as much as rice (if not more) but doesnt have THAT much prestige...

Baylor is an overpriced university.
Even with a $40000 scholarship that I received, I wouldn’t want to attend there.
There’s nothing in Waco. Seriously. xD

i had a 9th grade english teacher from baylor who was excellent so baylor is probably great for liberal arts…

but if you’re planning on science/engr (a BS degree) i would go elsewhere…

Yeah science/engineering at A&M is widely known.

I have teachers that went to both. The teacher I know went to Baylor is amazing. The 2 I know that went to A&M are so-so - but thats more personality and have VERY LITTLE to do with the schools haha. I’m pretty sure A&M is harder to get into but thats probably just because so many people apply. Its pretty popular with all their traditions and such. But since its public it’ll be mostly texans. Baylors also majority texans but its not +95% like A&M.

My aunt who is a college professor in Texas told me a degree from Baylor isn’t that well respected… but I’m sure everyone has their opinion. People say A&M is a cult-like and many of the jokes about A&M reference bestiality… BUT thats just rival false-ness.
You’ll get a good education with either school. Definitely VISIT(!!!) both and I think the schools are definitely different enough for you to have a preference.

I’ve lived in Texas many, many years and have never heard ONE! Regardless, you are perpetuating the ignorance. Why even bring that up?!

Yeah lol, I’ve never heard jokes of A&M referring to “bestiality”, and I grew up in a household where both of my parents went to TU. Not to mention I have several family members and friends whom go to Tech and Owho, and I’ve never heard such things out of them either. turquoisepearl obviously has some grudges against A&M or has been around people who do.
