A New Push to Get Low-Income Students Through College

It’s just over $700 for airfare in our case over Thanksgiving, if purchased well in advance. Note that it is significantly less costly on non-holiday dates; but even waiting 3-4 days or returning 3-4 days early (or both) does not drop the cost significantly.

When I went college lo those many years ago, I had no family support, either financially or in any other way (“college? We’re working class people, that’s for rich people!”). I ran out of money after a year. I didn’t know anything about financial aid and I didn’t know that you had to apply for scholarships - I thought you won them for people noticing how great you were in school. The same parent who told me that college wasn’t for people like us told me that I should NEVER borrow money, so I didn’t.

Which is why I’m 45 and graduating from undergraduate school in the spring. It’s all too easy to quit school when you can’t pay the rent or the other bills.

Congratulations on your graduation, Irishmom!

@irishmom2 - congratulations on a terrific accomplishment!
