A place to study pure math— for the love of it

Hi everyone,
Thank you again for such valuable feedback… I have learned so much from this forum! I wanted to post an update, since a few of you have asked. My son applied to Oxford; he was shortlisted, did his interviews, and will hear results on January 11. He also decided to apply REA to Princeton, and he found out last week that he was admitted. It was a very happy day.:slightly_smiling_face: Because of Covid, we haven’t been able to visit anywhere, but he’s extremely excited even so. We’ll visit on one of their Preview days in April. He’d already finished his other applications, so we’ll hear more decisions in April. That list includes Harvard, Yale, Chicago, MIT, Caltech, and some of the UC’s.

Finally, some of you were wondering what large state schools he applied to. He ended up putting early applications in at Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Utah. All of them seemed to have excellent math departments with very friendly, supportive, and welcoming faculty.

That’s our update— Wishing everyone a great holiday and a safe and happy new year!

Also, he attended Canada/USA Mathcamp over the summer, and loved it! It was virtual but they did a great job with it.

Well congratulations, he’s going to college! :joy:

Fingers crossed for Jan 11. It will be nice to have a choice on each side of the Atlantic.

Good luck on Tuesday! I was just wondering if anyone here had applied to Oxbridge this year as the main sub-forum has been a bit quiet, and thought perhaps the pandemic issues had put students off applying overseas.

Congrats on the Princeton admission.

My D22 also applied to Oxford for math. Keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow. Good luck to OP’s son!

I know the individual decisions aren’t out until tomorrow, but they’ve already released overall statistical feedback on this year’s process for Maths:

Actually spotted a rare bird over on the Student Room - a successful US PPE applicant.

Yes, but under the scenario you describe, isn’t “grading on a curve” just another way of saying, “returning to the base”?
