a public school?!

when i got my acceptance letter from usc, i phoned my friend, all excited.
this was how our conversation went:
her: i'm so happy for you! and the tuition will be cheaper too!
me: uhh....why would you say that?
her: well, because its a public school.
me: -silence-

haha... anybody else have this problem? i live in new jersey, and usc isn't all that well known here. most people think its the university of south carolina.

I'm from Jersey too, and I get the same reactions. Some people have heard USC but don't know it stands for the University of Southern California. It kind of ****es me off how people have no idea that its a really good school around here too. If they have even heard of it they usually just think football.

Congratulations on the acceptance. Did you just get the letter recently? I'm still waiting and hoping to find it in my mailbox each day.

i got it around a week ago...don't worry, they send the letters out in waves, so you may be in the next one!
are many kids applying from your school? i only know of one other person who applied from my school.

Yeah I met a guy from South Carolina...of course he had never heard of USC (the USC).

Well I got a good story for you. In our large competitive school district in NY, everyone (parents, teachers kids) follows who gets into which school especially any Ivy league, and the 2nd most popular - NYU (where most of the competive academic arty kids go). Last year, no one really heard about USC when my son decided to apply there) He got accepted to NYU & USC and picked USC which got the college gossip mills running because no one turns down NYU (Tisch). Now everyone knows USC and there is a handbook in the guidence office. Parents now stop me in the supermarket to ask me how it is there. So it just takes one to break out and you may be it.

I'm the only one applying from my school which is a small magnet school of 60 people, and my town's high school which has about 400 seniors. My school has had a few kids apply to USC the last 2 years, and none have gotten in. I'm hoping to be the first.

For the longest time, I thought USC was a public school in the UC System - and I live in So. Cal! I felt really stupid when I found out I was wrong, though of course I pretended I already knew that it wasn't.

I'm a undergraduate from China, so sorry for asking such a stupid question, :) but so u mean it is a private school, right? Then what about the tuition here? Is it very high? And which city is it in?

USC is a private school. Its tuition is around $32,000 and room and board is about $10,000. Thats pretty expensive. Its in Los Angeles.
