Hi there! I’m currently a high school junior-senior (just finished junior year), and I am trying to plan my courses I need for next year. I am aiming to get into Cal Poly Slo, UCSB, UCLA, UCSD, and UCB. These are the colleges I think I have a chance at, but I may also apply to some other reaches. I hope to get in for engineering, and I’m not sure how these colleges would look at taking an off year for math in senior year. I go to a very small private school, and our highest math class is AP Calculus AB, which I got an A in junior year. I don’t have the AP exam scores required to take the next calculus at my local CC, so I’m not sure what my course of action would be. My UW UC GPA is 3.97 and weighted is 4.3. My first go at the SAT I scored a 1460. So my question is: will taking a year off of math senior year harm my chances? What should I do if my high school doesn’t offer any more advanced courses? Thanks!
Talk to your counselor at school. See if you can get credit for doing a math class at your local com college. Or perhaps you can arrange independent study with a math teacher at your school. I do not think its wise to do no math senior year if you want to be an engineer.
