A+s

I got 4: (ooooh, look at me! look at me!)

Mechanics (Phys 1601)

Compsci 1007

Physics Lab

Applied Math Seminar (for my paper on the game theory behind the housing lottery - not kidding)

...and my girlfriend got one in Calc 1 and Intro to Marketing (apparently a joke). Other jokes A+ wise include Ear Training 1 and 2.

So it's possible to get them in science/engineering classes, you just have to game the system properly.

a+ is very easy to get in physics 1400/1600 if you have the barest grasp of the subject material and, if you're an ipho type, 2800 can be an a+ too.

intermediate micro/macro can be a+s for some profs.

otherwise, doable in calc (depending on teacher) and probably chem. impossible in gateway and honors math.

"impossible in gateway"

nope I actually missed it by 3 points out of 1000, I'm pretty sure a few people here and there did slightly better than me.

Can undergraduates take business school courses or would Intro to Marketing be considered an econ course?

1000/1000 is the only way to get an a+ in gateway. he said the highest he ever saw was in 970s, so i don't think you're right about being 3 points off. if you meant you were close to 97%, that's one thing, but it's not an a+ under mcgourty.

I had two classes this year where I had an A+ average and I still got As (they were humanities classes, but they were both big lecture courses where there was no participation grade and the grades I did receive were numerical). So some teachers don't give A+s even if you "technically" should get one, but I'm sure some do, dont know what the majority is.

Again, what's an "A+ average." An A+ average may be a 97 or 98 at your high school, but that has little meaning at Columbia.

Your point? Some teachers give A+'s when you "technically" shouldn't got one. Some teachers give you a lower grade than you deserve, and others a higher. Not sure why this is a shock.

You will most often find that quantitative classes (math/sci) are easier to get A+s in due to the more objective nature of the grading. Ive gotten 5 A+s this year, and they were all in math/sci classes where curves were strong. However, professors can still play with numbers in those cases by enacting z-scores and other grading systems, and then grade based off that distribution at their own discretion. In any case though, A+s usually turn out where there are a large amount of people in a quant class so you can ride an 80% or so to an A+.

Columbia2002 - I used A+ average to mean an average at or near 100. I realize not everyone considers a 97 an A+ but somewhere between 98-100 often corresponds to A+ for obvious reasons...

We all know not everyone always gets what grade they "deserve" and there are many other factors. Thanks for pointing out the obvious. My "point" was to answer a question about A+s from my personal experience. Get a life and stop attacking people who are trying to answer someone else's question!!

i sortof have to agree with aube88 here.... your argument is pointless.... we get what you're (actually used the apostrophe there so your response to this isn't "you don't know the difference between your and you're") trying to say here, repeating it or responding to every post with the same exact point becomes very annoying.... let it go already

Mcgourty told me that he gave an A+ to a girl who had been doing a solid job, went to the midterm, froze up and couldn't speak. Then she had an excellent final. Jack was so amazed by the improvement, that he gave her an A plus. It is very very uncommon in gateway.

did u ask if she was hot? ...i bet she was....mcgourty is such a creep

i'm not surprised that he gives A+s to the least deserving people....gateway is really an A for effort type of class and if you actually get your stuff done then he'll screw you over and you'll be disappointed.

by "excellent final", McGourty meant "she gives great head".

This is a SEAS class we're talking about. I'd bet not.

Is there a pic of him online anywhere? I looked quickly and couldn't find one. I know nothing about him, and I'm curious. This thread is hilarious.

Wow, 5 A+s! Would you mind if I asked what classes/professors they were?

In high school, maybe. At Columbia, in classes that use numeric grading (i.e., math/sci/eng classes), exams are generally designed so that the professors get a good distribution of papers. Most of my exams had average scores in the 60-70 range. You're trained in high school to think that 90's an A-, 93's an A, 98's an A+ or whatever, but that's not "often" or even "regularly" what grading is like at Columbia.

^Then you have times when people get 95%+ on every test when the averages are around 65%. I would assume that getting about 30 points above the average on every test would correlate to an A+ in the class.

that's odd, because mcgourty said to our class that he had never given an a+ out, even though it was technically possible if the 1000/1000 was accomplished. anyways, i hated that class and an a+ in gateway is not something i would be particularly proud of.

i second shraf's sentiment - i was screwed over by that class.
