You are a horrible person.

disagreement is fine, I think it’s just the condescending attitude (at least via the internet) that takes away the possibility of a constructive conversation. voicing a different opinion carefully and with tact is not being a doormat, it’s being a thoughtful communicator.

there’s no need to compare plights anyway. worse off than all parties previously mentioned are people being diagnosed with cancer, kidnapped into human trafficking, or living in a war zone. that’s obvious, but you can still think of their suffering and have honest feelings about your own situation, whatever it may be.

suze- i wasn’t asking for sympathy/ pity- i just jotted a few thoughts in language that was far from inflammatory. i’m not even sure why this whole argument even started…
i don’t think there’s anything to forgive/ apologize for b/c seriously, neither of us did anything wrong…

anyhoo yeah, money’s a huge deal.
first semester was basically hell b/c i had to apply to 5 different scholarships, write about 10+ essays in a week (not kidding; there was so much going on), got rejected from my first choice, then from a bunch of scholarships, to the point where i seriously considered attending college in another country or signing up for ROTC.
thank god cornell actually listened to my letter& gave me money.

now that i look back, i realize my comments were a bit snooty.
but it’s just me after a long, tiresome year just venting…
ppl say stupid/ thoughtless things on the internet, and i’m not an exception.

How out of control a discussion can get…
From my own experience, I can totally understand that the college stuff eventually settles in. I, too, am not as excited as I was several weeks ago (not that it’s a letdown, but now I do not sense the kind of ecstasy that I felt).

To be honest, I hate this kind of explosive reaction to one’s comment. I do get that there are students who are in a more difficult plight than any of us on the CC. But, guess what, the vast majority of people on earth cannot even think of attending college. Even those who were “only” admitted to their safeties are, as a matter of fact, a small privileged minority. This does not necessarily mean that they cannot be unhappy about their situation. But my point is that our perception of “happiness” is relative, and this is very a humane streak. We should perhaps bear this in mind when writing. While I have nothing against mentioning the “worse” plights of others, the sound of sarcasm and snootiness is not necessary.

suze, your friend decided to go w/ 0 aid?! wow she must’ve really loved it. i loved it too, but i couldnt take 200,000+ in debt

Haha don’t forget the EDers who go for several months without more than a letter and a t-shirt for comfort. At least now we have our NetIDs and email and forms to fill in, its something to do, at least.

Chill during the summer…
