meadow36- OP is sensitive to the chance of the possible ridicule from others.

"They win because you allowed them to get into your head. "

Maybe they thought that my not going to the ceremony was a snub to them.

“you’re asking this because you want to defend yourself when any of us say you were disrespectful and then you come up with bs about how people will laugh at you. I don’t see anything funny about getting an award. :|”

And there is also nothing funny about being a top student, and yet there were kids who made fun of me for that.

Possible ridicule. Oh no. Seriously, if you can’t face it now, I pity for your future. There will always be jealous people. Why are you letting them get in the way of maintaining you dignity?

"They win because you allowed them to get into your head. "
This.

And no, they do not think not going to the ceremony was a snub to them. They could care less.

"And there is also nothing funny about being a top student, and yet there were kids who made fun of me for that. "
That’s why you’re a pansy, you need to man up (or woman up, but that doesn’t work)

Paging Dr. Freud… Dr. Sigmund Freud…

Being a top student is one thing. You were made fun of for other things. I think your counselors may have spoon-fed you too many “YOU ARE SO GREAT” and “THIS IS SUCH AN HONOR”-type comments, but let’s be realistic here. Being a top student at almost all schools (even at mine, which ranks well within the top 100 high schools) is a joke. If you try, you can pull it off. So long as you committed previously and have accumulated quality study skills (which can happen even as a freshman) you will be fine.

But does this take away from what you should have done? No. You chose to mold yourself into whatever you are – I know many top students that are very sociable people and do not spend their time on more academic ventures. Be proud of the path you have chosen; go do something else if you fear other peoples’ opinions so much.

That in no way at all, excuses the honor you received. I highly doubt if you were a jerk that the award would have gone your way.

"And no, they do not think not going to the ceremony was a snub to them. They could care less. "

That’s good. At least I shouldn’t feel guilty for not going to the ceremony.

“Disrespectful? Yes. You should have taken your award gracefully, and left in peace. Who care w what the other kids would have said?”

It would have been painful.

This happened last spring and you’re still thinking about it? Send a nice note as soon as possible and call it a day.

I am not going to send a note. There is no need.

Let this thread die then. You make your own decisions, be they rude or not.
