A UChicago kid visiting Northwestern! *gasp*

This is more directed at current NU students and anybody who knows the campus and area pretty well.

I'll probably end up visiting NU sometime soon. My initial plan was to go up this Tuesday to hear Alex Kotlowitz give a talk, but given that the trip from my Hyde Park haunts to Evanston could take me up to two hours via public transportation, and given that I have a lot of work to do, I don't think I can invest that much time into seeing Alex Kotlowitz.

(For those of you who might want to go:Award-Winning Writer Alex Kotlowitz to Give Reading, NewsCenter, Northwestern University)

Kotlowitz is an INCREDIBLE writer, and for anybody even vaguely interested in writing, sociology, Chicago history, urban development, etc. I am sure he has a lot to say.

Anyway, I am probably going to do a research project on the Bahai Temple in Wilmette, which is off of the Linden stop on the purple line. I plan to make a full-day excursion, and I realize that I don't know the area all that well and could use a suggestion or two of places to eat and other things to see while I'm up there. I would also just like to walk around NU's campus, because, well, colleges in general interest me, and I haven't been around NU on foot in years. It would also be cool if NU had professors or research facilities about the temple that you might happen to know about.... don't worry about scouring the internets for me; I'll find them myself. (If you happen to know of exceptional religious studies/Chicago history/architecture profs I could contact though, that would be amazing beyond belief).

How far is the Bahai temple from campus? Walking distance? CTA bus? (I know the purple line runs between Noyes and Linden, if nothing else). What should I do on NU's campus, just to be able to say I came and saw? I have a few high school buddies at NU who might be available to show me around a bit, though the one I'm closest to is abroad right now.

Any and all suggestions, either here or in a PM, more than welcome.

The Bahai temple is walkable from NU campus, but NOT at this time of year! It's a good long walk - I'm guessing 45 minutes to an hour. My boyfriend (now husband) and I would walk up there, but we'd make a half day out of it and stop at Plaza del Lago in Wilmette.

If you have a map, this will make sense: I would start at the Arch (where Sheridan Road curves, across from the Alice Millar church) and walk "into" the campus ... Past Harris Hall, University Hall, Annie May Swift, that whole area ... Walk all the way up to Norris (student center) where you could take a break, get a bite to eat, etc. Norris is your gateway to the lakefront. Obviously not with this cold, but if it were nicer out, it's a really gorgeous stroll and you could walk along the lakefront all the way up north.

Take a look at Deering Meadow and the old section of the library. The library itself is neo-Brutalist and I don't think very attractive at all.

You could keep making your way up north and go to the fraternity quads and look at the old houses there, or alternatively retrace your steps, cross Sheridan Road again and go into the Scott Hall / Cahn Auditorium / sorority quad area, all the way up to Willard Hall and then back.

A current student could advise you better on what to do on the campus these days.

Have fun!

Thanks for the suggestions! Our library and your library were designed by the same architect.

I also didn't realize it was a 45 minute + walk. Good to know.

Not sure if his specialty really applies to what you're doing, but since you asked about Chicago Historians Professor Henry C. Binford is more or less the best there is.

yeah you don't wanna walk to bahai in the winter. there are three el stops at davis, foster, and noyes, i would recommend getting on at one of them and taking the el to linden, then walking from there to bahai.

if it was warmer i'd tell you to take a walk around the lakefill, but i feel like with the weather this week that would be an exercise in misery

Yeah, I hear ya.

I think I'll just take the el to Linden and see what goes on from there.
