A Year Off - Chances Blown?

I need to take a year off between undergrad and grad school simply to get my finances in order. I am ready to apply now as I will be an upcoming senior but I just don't have the money right now (and I am not willing to take a loan nor do I receive any financial aid for the program I am applying to).

Am I at a disadvantage in admissions having to do this? How can I remain competitive during my year away from school? I'll be going for a well-paying job that doesn't have anything to do with my major (obviously to raise funds for school).

Thanks!

Breathe in… and out… feel better? Relax–you’ll be fine. Lots of people take time off from after undergrad. And don’t worry about not being in your field. No one will care (or more to the point, notice). I took nine years off, mostly in an industry only vaguely related to my field. I did no research during that time, nor did I take any coursework. I got in to a PhD program that I’m very happy with.

When you apply for graduate programs try to relate your job experience to desired business skills - teamwork, leadership, public speaking/presentations, dedication, or any other kind of strong work ethic.
