Ability to contribute to the school community

What does the following phrase actually mean (as admission criteria)?

"The ability to contribute to the school community."

Each school will probably define this differently, but basically...What will the applicant bring to the school? Will he/she spend all their time playing video games in their dorm or will they join new clubs, make new friends... in general make the school a better place? That pretty much sums it up.

do you guys think this question is a big factor in the admission process?

I'm probably completely wrong because other wise they wouldn't have the question, but I always figured that if someone wrote a really thoughtful answer they were on an ego trip

"I will add my superior analytical skills as well as my wit and charm to the exeter community"

they obviously can tell who is right for the school and who isn't, but I can never really think of why a school would want me. I'm not very different than most applicants, so when I answered that question I said something like "I'm thoughtful". And obviously everyone is different, but I doubt there is only 1 amazing soccer player applying, etc. This question always seemed to me like the place when they decide whether you have a huge ego or realize that you're no different than most people

I have said this before but one school told us the answer my son gave was one of the best - it was something like "I would help other people to do their best, I would make XYZ school proud that I was a student."

I really appreciated hearing these perspectives - it's a bit different from what i thought it meant. I understood contributing to have to do with concrete skills - say if school is looking for a certain instrumentalist for the orchestra or an athlete in a specific discipline to complete a team, etc.

"Contributing to the school community" has many meanings. At the least, it means someone who will not just hole-up in their dorm room to study or play video games. It also means that schools want doers who will act in school plays, join the debate team, play school sports, play in the school band/orchestra, run for class officer, organize charitable fund raisers & projects, edit and/or write for school publications, attend & participate in voluntary school events such as weekend dances and listen to campus speakers, etc.

that you'll actually do something positive in the school, and not just hang around and do nothing. Like you would use most of its resources, help others, etc.

what are some ways you can contibute to the school community

i am suppose to write an essay heres the ?
Write an essay that conveys to us a sense of who you are.
any suggestions?

I’m thinking, tell a story or illustrate who you are? What makes you unique? Give them a sense of what you’re character and personality is like.

what’ll youll do there. the clubs and sports you want to join. what your interested in at the school. being involved and participating. they dont want someone thats going to attend and only attend classes but not get involved in anything the school offers. they want a person that’ll do sports, clubs, etc. when they arrive
