About majoring in computer science?

I’m going to be a senior in high school next year and I have to start planing to collage. I am lately became pretty interested in computer science and planing to major in it,due to my love for computer and technology, but I don’t know too much about it, so if you know a lot about the topic, a current student in this major or recent graduate please give me some information.

  • what kind of thing should I know before heading into this field -What should I look into -How can I prepare
  • I'm haven't start learning coding yet, (don't really have any knowledge beside average consumer skill) will I be ok? -What kind of skills are require
  • What kind of thing do you learn
  • What kind of job can you get (I was told by an adult that people in this field get lay off a lot, is that true)
  • How many branch are there (programmer, software engineer, data admin etc) and what do they do, or how are they different

Any tips, information will help thank you very much

  1. You don't "have" to know anything about the major, but prior knowledge about computers, programming skills, etc. is usually very helpful.
  2. What you should look into: What kind of courses will you be taking? What's the programming language you will be studying in detail?
  3. How you can prepare: Watch or read something about computers. YouTube has very interesting videos on programming languages, algorithms and mathy problems.
  4. Yes, you will be ok without knowing a programming language.
  5. The basic skills? Besides being able to follow instructions.. I would say critical thinking.
  6. What you will learn: Too much to list here. This also depends on your curriculum.
  7. What kind of jobs you can get: Anything with "computer", "software", "database" or "web" in the job title, really.
  8. Too many branches to list here, but you can google too, right?!

Also talk to your counselor.
