Abstinence-Only vs. Comprehensive Sex-Ed

Which one is better in your opinion? I think there needs to be an overhaul on Ab-Only, but I don't think it's entirely bad. That said, how do you guys feel?

who cares?

nobody I know ever cares about anything that is ever said by anyone else besides their own friends. Basically in health class say use condoms and talk to them about stds and that's it..anything else is just a waste of money.

they're going to find out anyway. it's better they learn the whole truth than some corrupted secondhand version of it.

Pffft..we should experiment with this instead :P

and see which group has the higher pregnancy rate...then we won't need this debate (I know, unethical...)

hasn't such a study already been done? It obviously wasn't a prospective because as you said, it's unethical, but I'm pretty sure people with abstinence-only sex ed have a higher pregnancy rate than people with more comprehensive sex ed.
This is kind of old

Oral sex lessons to cut rates of teenage pregnancy | UK news | The Observer

I cannot understand, for the life of me, how any human being being can have experienced hormones and still believe in the effectiveness of abstinence-only education. How is that possible? What are these people on?

skool of hard knoks, beetchiz. yoo goda lurn it on da streetz

and by "on da streetz" you mean "in your $1.4 million home in the Minneapolis ghetto"

strayed up, foo

I really doubt the fact that teenage pregnancies occur at such as high rate has much to do with lack of sex ed. I mean: I never even took sex ed and know how you get pregnant and all that stuff.

Rather, I think teenage pregnancies have much to do with the fact that the partakers do not fully understand the consequences/do not worry about the consequences. When you're 16 and have 2 babies but get free education and other services, why worry about the consequences? You can live a life of risks without having to feel the full results of your consequences.

You people make me curl up my fists and hit pillows.

My ghetto public school has abstinence-only. They tell you that STDs are inevitable and condoms are eh. I can estimate that more than 90% of my class doesn't know the basic anatomy of their own bodies. Yeah, they know where to put what where, but that doesn't mean they know everything else. They honestly think using mountain dew and the rhythm technique works.

It's simple ignorance. Nobody tells them so they don't know. You think, Oh, open a book, learn the consequences, it isn't that difficult. Yes, it is. Because they don't know that they can do that. Jesus says don't do it, and that's all they need to know.

Seriously. Seriously. Think about what I just said. If teenagers were given comprehensive sex education along with knowledge of exactly what they are risking, do you think there would be the same rate of teenage pregnancy? Yeah, some don't care, but they do later.

Teenagers are going to do it whether the Man likes it or not. You might as well teach them how to use a condom.

I completely agree with snoopy. I think I can safely say that most teens don't know whats out there in terms of birth control. Or how you can get it without telling your parents.

It's so much better to be able to choose to have safe sex. And when they show you pictures of herpes and genital warts, you won't want to take any risks.

Everybody says that they don't think teens are knowledgeable about birth control and related topics, but do you really believe that? You don't think people have heard of condoms? I think that's pretty arrogant to assume.

It has more to do with lack of foresight and lack of facing consequences (see my example in my previous post).

...Because they don't know. How are they supposed to know about the effectiveness of birth control if no one tells them? Yeah, they've heard of condoms, but the majority of people I know have no idea how effective they are. They think they "get in the way". Yes, lack of foresight, but lack of foresight due to ignorance.

Sigh.

Teenagers are horny and stupid. Just give them condoms and stand back, jesus christ it's not hard.

Snoop is correct, everyone else go home.

Abstinence-only sex ed is the biggest crime to ever happen to man (& woman...haha).

My school doesn't teach sex-ed at ALL, and do you know what they call us?

"Knock-'em-up-is".

Exactly. It seems like liberals are always about "more education", when it's not "education" that will help these kids. I don't disagree that kids have to know (to some degree) about birth control and condoms in order to use them, but, for real...you could go to the ghetto-est school in your town or state and do a poll asking kids do they know what condoms and birth control are and I bet most of them will know. Between the Internet, MTV, porn being more pervasive, and sometimes kids just catching their parents talking or something, do you seriously think there's a 15 year old out there who doesn't know what a condom is, or what the basic function of birth control is? I don't.

"I don't care" isn't "I don't know" because one thing about it: they know they probably shouldn't be sleeping around at their age anyway. When I was 16, I probably couldn't tell you exactly where one would go to get birth control pills, but I also knew kids our age shouldn't be sleeping around in the first place.

but i bet you the "ghetto-est kids" will tell you that condoms are no more effective than pulling out, and that they aren't worth it cuz they take away feeling. THAT IS IGNORANCE.

... it's not difficult.

Abstinence only education is like telling kids never to ride a bike because they could fall, even though there are helmets and kneepads and all kinds of protective gear. Yes, you might still get hurt, but the training and safety gear can help reduce the risk.

And besides, riding a bike feels good.
