Academic Dismissal Appeal?

Hello!
I messed up first semester of my freshman year and got put on probation with a 1.8 GPA. As someone who was very limited at home, it was difficult to adjust to all of the opportunities presented to me at school.
While I did show improvement my second semester, I decided to challenge myself and take organic chemistry and ended up failing the course. I came really close to meeting the 2.0 requirement, but because I failed chem, I got a 1.9.
I was just wondering what my chances are of the board accepting my appeal if I showed improvement in all my other classes, but ended up doing terribly in what is considered a very challenging course. Of course I would include a much more extensive explanation, and plan as to how I plan on succeeding if I am granted the privilege of returning next semester in my letter.
Failing my first class was enough of a wake up call, and I feel as though while I could have done more to avoid it, as someone with an undecided major, I have learned a lot about my strengths and interests from my academic endeavors. I also feel as though there is a lot I could do to improve, as I realize now how I should align my priorities. I was a part of a singing group that required 10-15 hours of practice a week. I would be more than willing to give this up if I were to return next semester.
Is there any out there who has experienced this that could give me a little hope?
