My senior son is looking for a liberal arts education with a major in communication design/graphic design staying in the northeast. He doesn’t want to narrow his focus and so does not want to go to design school. He is a good student (by the numbers: GPA 3.86, Class rank 12 of 190 (6.3%), SAT 1430, ACT 32) with extensive music and drama extra curricular work so I think he is a little ahead of the curve in terms of getting in at Skidmore.
We had a great visit at Skidmore and found the fine art curriculum is exactly what he is wanting. He very much wants to be in an environment where students are excited and engaged in their studies. Is there anyone out there who can comment on the level academic commitment and engagement at Skidmore in general and specifically in the Art Department. Thanks!
I’m hoping there is someone out there who can comment on the level academic commitment and engagement at Skidmore in general and specifically in the Art Department. Thanks!
(Update son’s 2nd SATs 750/780)
I cannot comment on your specific question, but with his outstanding numbers (new SAT score of 1530, high class rank & solid GPA) I encourage him to apply to Brown University which, I believe but could be wrong, allows students to take courses at RISD.
Skidmore College is a great school, but it is wise to create options.
Skidmore’s art department is outstanding. I have a student there who also considered RISD and other art colleges but is extremely happy to have gone with Skidmore, both for its strength in art and its offerings in business and other subjects.
My D is a senior at Skidmore, not an arts student but a STEM student, and has done outstanding. While they obviously cannot offer all the 300 and 400 level + classes that a large university can, she was able to get a great base for her double Math/CS studies. The classes they did not offer that she really wanted she was able to get in her study abroad program. She had a great internship this past summer and just received her first job offer in Software Engineering for after graduation. We couldn’t be more pleased.
