Academic Fraud at UNC Basketball Program

So you are comfortable using the Martin Report to trash the athletic department, despite the fact that the Martin Report clears the athletic department?

From the Martin Report, verbatim: “This was not an athletic scandal. Sadly, it was clearly an academic scandal; but an isolated one, within this one department.”

Hark. You are so off topic . Let’s just through the kitchen sink why don’t we? Bethel is just a UNC shill and if you referenced his early comments they differ significantly from the party line he now walks. He has only been there for a few years so he has no credibility as to what he has see. Also, The data that was given to the three investigators of Mary Willingham was only an incomplete partial set data as per your chancellor. The data that she says she used was much more extensive. Thus comparing apples to oranges. Plus, you are comparing a crack addicted murdering prostitute with a staff member of your fine university that worked directly with these players for many years. I think if anybody would know she would. Also, early on your buddy Bethel agreed with her. It’s interesting how he has changed his tune. I guess money is the same color for everybody.

No, I’m comfortable using the Martin Report to trash the AfAm department and the phony classes they offered that some athletes took.

SACs did do a very cursory review and found significant problems. They put UNC on a years probation and that UNC has to offer graduates the ability to come back to complete their suboptimal degrees. I’m sure they are coming back in droves. Also the NCAA has said that the problems have to be self-reported. Curiously UNC has not self-reported any academic problems. I guess that is a lesson for all institutions, just don’t self-report.

There are already 4 athletes, a staff member as well as multiple emails linking the athletic dept to this scandal. More are to follow as history tells us. Martin did what he was paid to do. It is very rare that someone contracted by a company to not do exactly what that company wants.

Bethel never agreed with Willingham. If you read his blog, you will see him address the comments that you are referring to. Seems like Bethel is much more than just a UNC shill, given that his letter to Congress got Willingham uninvited from her scheduled appearance before a Congressional committee up there.

In the past month, Willingham has:

-Been caught lying on her recently released IRB application
-Resigned in disgrace
-Been caught lying about a supposed “A minus” paper that never was
-Been caught lying about numerous “paper classes”
-Been caught violating confidential FERPA and HIPAA data so that, according to her co-conspirator, JAy Smith, they could get access to confidential student records to include in their for-profit book that they are writing

There is a reason why Willingham is no longer employed. There is a reason why she was told NOT to come to DC to testify, as she was previously scheduled to do so. There is a reason why she was removed from the O’Bannon trial witness list. Her credibility is gone. Bethel has completely destroyed her. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see Willingham taken away in handcuffs before all is said and done.

Side note… My favorite Willingham moments-

Moment One: Willingham made a powerpoint arguing that 9+4=10.
Moment Two: Willingham asked President Obama to make printing off an NCAA “March Madness” bracket a crime.
Moment Three: Willingham admits that the “A minus” paper she gave to the media wasn’t an “A minus” paper at all and that she was mistaken, and then goes to her twitter account and retweets articles that still contained the erroneous, initial assertion.

Dude, she worked at your univ. For a decade, not mine.

The fact that she ever worked at a university as prestigious at UNC is the biggest travesty here. She was clearly vastly underqualified and ethically unprepared for her position, as her shoddy and now discredited “research” has demonstrated.

Then maybe you should go after whoever hired her. These are all Carolina people making these accusations. So maybe the problem is bigger than you think.

I agree that whoever hired her should be fired…along with a few other people. Thankfully, she is no longer employed at UNC and has been thoroughly discredited, although the damage she did with her lies will likely take some time to heal.

Notice of Allegations is in. Based on this, I’d guess women’s hoops will be hit the hardest.
