I know a young boy who is a talented athlete and has a goal to attend UPenn in a few years. Anyone has ideas of what are the minimum requirements of GPA, SAT, SAT II, ACT for athletic recruiting?
Holistic admission means that there is no set of criteria. They will admit you if they want you.
There is an entire section on athletic recruiting on this website. Read through the hundreds of posts on that question over the years. There are minimum requirements, an academic index is used etc
go under the college admissions tab then look under athletic recruit section
@f2000sa, Thank you for your response. I thought the universities in Ivy League only admit athletes who meet some minimum academic requirements align with the league and this is why they are in the league.
@fleishmo6, Thanks for the information. I will dig it out.
plenty of great info you can go through literally years of similar questions
also google academic index, that will give you an understanding of what scores are used to calculate
There is agreement among the Ivy league schools that the average of a team is within 10 percent of the school average. So if they take a lower scoring athlete on football, they need higher players to offset and keep the average within one decile…

If he wants to ply his athletics to his best advantage, he’s best to get on the radar screens of many colleges. If he’s the caliber to get into Penn, then MANY schools will want him. Do his current coaches have success in getting HS players into college programs? What are the “showcase” events for prospective recruits? Does he have stats or video that he can upload to the various showcase websites?
Again, Penn is a great goal but any prudent person would cast a wide net. Good luck
@BigPapiofthree, 10% is a easy way to keep in mind in terms of scores.
@T26E4, Thanks for teh suggestions and I will pass through.
To others who may be interested in this topic, here is the link of calculation of AI (Academic Index) for Ivy League athletic recruiting:
http://www.tier1athletics.org/2012/10/01/academic-index-calculator-2016/
It’s actually within one standard deviation of the overall school average I believe, which in this case is a bit less than 10%. But to really boil it down, the average athletic recruit at Penn is probably somewhere in the vicinity of 205 on the AI.
One of the blog posts on the Tier 1 site noted above is a pretty detailed case study of AI at Harvard. The Harvard numbers are a bit higher than at Penn, but it’s great information in the post nonetheless.
As noted, those below the recruit average will tend to be top recruits in priority sports, while those who are a notch lower athletically and/or in lower priority sports will tend to be higher.
I would give you a heads up and say that things depend lots on the sport. For example ivy soccer typically makes their early commitments spring of junior year. Ivy football is more around winter of junior year. Mens lacrosse starts looking at kids before high school and a team like penn will have most of its commitments by the summer after 9th grade. As the previous posters mentioned you will need to hit a target AI that the coach will give you and the minimum the ivy league will allow is a 176, which is approximately a 3.2UW gpa and 1650sat. Never fear, if you can’t make those numbers and the coach still likes you there may be an option to do a PG year at one of the well know prep schools for another ~$50k. So figure out the details for your sport, think about (or ask your coaches) where you fit in ranking wise in your sport and think about whether you want to be a division 1 athlete. Remember, just because you are at an ivy league school doesn’t mean it is not a huge commitment. Is is a job and will consume a good majority of your time.
