Academic Suspension appeal...help please!

Okay. I will do. Thanks for the tip

Okay guys, I just sent it. Wish me luck. Thanks to everyone for all the help, I really appreciate it!

Are you taking any remedial classes over the summer?

Um no. Iā€™ve aleady taken those classes. If you mean classes in general, then yes

Just a thought: Since there is so much writing to be done in college, an extra class on the mechanics of writing might be helpful for many students.

Good point

Good luck!!! Please let us know how it all turns out.

I certainly will!!!

Does your grandmother have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, and was the coma from high or low blood sugars? These are short-term problems so I donā€™t really understand how your grandmotherā€™s ā€œcomaā€ could have caused a depression. Was she in the hospital a long time or just a couple of days? Was it stressful because you had to visit her while you were trying to do work? I donā€™t mean to express doubts, but the dean will have the same questions so I am trying to be helpful before you meet with him or her. Most everyone has some sort of health issue in extended family. Also, diabeteic comas donā€™t just happen randomly: your grandma needs better care, either from herself or someone else.

The problems with peers are also a little iffy in terms of being a problem easily understood and accepted by the dean. Cost of books could have been addressed.

I am being honest. I sincerely hope that this appeal is accepted but I think you should prepare yourself. And if it is not accepted, read the post above about the positives of leaving this school : you can rescue your GPA (though your transcript will follow you) and start fresh. Think of this college policy as helping you avoid another semester that affects your record. If you talk with the dean, offer to accept a suspension, offer to take classes or work or meet any other requirement in order to get back in, if that is what you really want to do.

Kids who take medical leaves for serious health problems have to prove they can do the work when they return, even when their records were stellar wtih all Aā€™s. That may not seem fair. It is not about the virtue or character of the person. It is about the college giving a slot to someone who can succeed despite considerable challenges.

The fact that you had challenges does not get you back in. You have to show you can succeed even WITH challenges. Life always has challenges.

You can turn this around, donā€™t worry, but it may not be in the way that you are expecting.

I can believe a diabetic who slipped into a coma could also suffer from depression. I had an elderly relative whose blood sugar bounced around like a ping pong ball and the levels seemed to cause both incredible emotional highs and drastic lows. It can be a vicious disease.

@misssmiley888, Good luck with your appeal.

Austiinmshaul, I have a daughter with type 1 and am well aware. The reference to depression is the OPā€™s depression not the grandmotherā€™s.

Oh, thanks @compmom. I missed that part. You make a great point. Thinking through what sheā€™s going to say in a meeting is just as important as what to put in the letter. I hadnā€™t thought that far ahead.

The depression wasnā€™t solely because of my grandmothersā€™ diabetes, it was because of being harassed by classmates. And I omitted that because i donā€™t have proof of it. Ive addressed all of that in my letter @compmom . if you had read the whole thread, I had written several letters with the help of people here. I adressed all of that in my letter.

I had already read the whole thread a few times when I just posted. I am worried for you thatā€™s all. Think about what you will say in a meeting. And be prepared to earn your way back, to that school or another one. There are many ways for you to get back on the path.

editing to add: try to get syllabi or book lists early and order used books online; they are often cheaper that way; also, sell your own used books if you can

@compmom I appreciate the feedback, thank you. I understand what youā€™re saying, there was a few people who hadnā€™t read the thread before posting and it agitated me a bit, because it seemed like they were bringing up stuff that was no longer pertinent to my situation since I decided not to include it in my letter.

So after I emailed my dean, he told me this:

ā€œI will wait to hear from you when you get the required documents to schedule an appointment.ā€

Iā€™m on pins and needles. Basically once I email my dean, I have to meet with an academic advisor to show them my transcript and they have to fill out a curriculum sheet. Then email him so he can set a time to where I will meet with him face to face. Iā€™m going to the school on Monday to meet with an advisor.

If it helps your anxiety, please really understand that your life is going to work out no matter what happens with this appeal. It may very well work out fine, and things are in play now, but your life does not depend on it:)

I would bring documents related to your three solutions.

  1. perhaps a note from your parents stating that you will live with them, and they have sufficient funds to pay for your books (and college in general!); they can also attest to your grandmotherā€™s help
  2. police report from when you reported harassment, and any statement from an RA if that is possible

Do you have documentation from a therapist? With or without documentation of clinical depression?

If you do have a diagnosis, it is always possible that the grades could be wiped from the record, but I assume you did not go to disabilities office. Still, if the therapist is associated with the school, the dean and therapist may be able to work something out.

Show willingness to do whatever they ask to get back in. Good luck!

@compmom. thank you very much. Iā€™m just trying to stay optimistic. I can get my parents to write a letter, and the police report. But I donā€™t have documentation from a therapist. I can go to the therapist at my school, though

Update: I just met with my counselor, and she gave me my curriculum summary. I emailed my dean, and will be meeting with him on Thursday at 11:30. I am at the counselorā€™s office right now, waiting to be seen by a psychiatrist. Any tips on how I should prepare for the meeting?

Just met with someone in the counseling office. Apparently, the counselor is on maternity leave and wonā€™t be back until August. They are trying to find someone to cover for her. Until then, I gave the person my information and they will be calling when there is a psychiatrist (sp) for me to speak to. Now I am filling out paperwork
