Hello, I just wanted to ask if academics play a HUGE role when applying for a theatre major? My stats are not that good, so I'm kind of hoping that my audition, extra curriculars, and essay would counter-balance my academic achievements. Also, if I apply for scholarship, do they ever give a lot for theatre?

Basically I have: GPA (unweighted): 3.5 SAT 2: 630 Math IIC, 600 Bio (I know, horrible) SAT: Not yet out, but I'm feeling like an 1800-1900 AP's: 4 Psych, 5 Calc AB

Extra Curriculars: Advanced Drama Department- Secretary of our International Thespian Society. We are also apart of DTASC (Drama Teacher's Association) National Forensics League- Varsity Member Red Cross Youth Corporation- Officer (Member to the Board) Senior Men and Women- Community Service Program Yearbook
And I also do a few other community service works outside of school.

I also attended the Tisch Summer Program- Lee Strasberg, for 6 college credits, where I earned A's in.

Could you guys tell me my chances? Thanks...

UCLA
Carnegie Mellon
NYU- Tisch
Emerson
DePaul
Syracuse
University of Michigan
UT of Austin
USC

Note: I am auditioning for all of these schools. So I am asking whether my academic achievemnets would hinder my chances of getting in. Thanks guys!

I would suggest that you add at least one program that does not require an audition where you meet the academic admissions stats Make sure that this is a porgram that you would like to attend! There is not really a safety in the list of schools listed above.

No, no. These are the schools I'm applying with a Theatre major. I have 5 other schools I'm applying to with a Political Science major. I have back-ups (Boston U and UC Riverside). I just want to know if I have a chance with those colleges, inspite of my poor stats.

Michigan places a great deal of importance on academics. For musical theater (and I think for acting) they prescreen applicants on the basis of the applications, transcript, test scores and so on, and then invite those they want to see to audition. But they make no bones about it: they care that you are a strong student.

Purchase doesn't have a high academic bar at all. It really is all about the audition. I know kids who had very, very mediocre academic transcripts who got in.

CMU is basically almost all about the audition, even though the school is highly selective academically for other, non performance majors.

By the way, I wouldn't think of Boston U as a "back up" for anything, even academically. It's a tough school to get into for anything.

NYU takes academics into account for all students including TISCH.

Emerson -- your academics seem well in range... the audition is key (and I do not believe you can indicate that you would be interested in the BA if not admitted to the BFA -- check with the school).

Syracuse - takes academics into account, but I believe the audition can help boost an applicant.... meaning if the student is within range and the dept. wants them it could hel their admissions. I went to Syracuse years ago -- I think that your grades are higher than mine were... but is seems that college admissions has gotten tougher all around since the late 80s/ early 90s.

Do you have back-ups for theatre, or just Political Science? I agree with NMR that Boston University cannot be considered a back-up for anything. It is academically competitive.

In terms of your SAT -- what do you anticipate your Math and Verbal combined. Most schools will look at that more closely.

Thank you guys so much! You guys really helped. I'm glad I cam here before I made any final decisions. I will look more into back-up schools because I am terrified everything will just fall down. Thanks, very much! :)

Hey everyone. I'm a new member. I'm a senior at Laguardia H.S. NYC. I have been doing theatre since the age of 8. I did a summer shakespeare program for 8 summers ('00-07). I'm also very into musical theatre. I did CAP21's summer program at NYU-Tisch. I have taken part in the mainstage musical (at a performing arts school so it requires an audition.) I love the work that acting requires and the process is sometimes stressful yet always rewarding and it's exhilarating for me. I'd first like to say that I've been reading this info and its so very informative and seems quite substantial. Right now, I'm looking at NYU-CAP21, Vassar, Brandeis, Carnegie Mellon, Rutgers, SUNY Purchase Conservatory, Juilliard, USC, Syracuse, Boston University, and Emerson. Can anyone fill me in on the drama programs at: USC, Syracuse, Boston University, and Rutgers/how competitive they are/how is the faculty. I've heard great things and I learned a bunch from the websites but I want a non-self-promoting opinion (aka not the schools website.) Also, if anyone knows of any really good SUNY drama programs OTHER than the Purchase Conservatory one, please spill. THANKS!!!!

I went to Syracuse, and I would say it is a a very strong program. I know people who went to USC, BU and Rutgers and all are strong program. All are highly competitive for admissions.

You may also want to look at Fordham, Sarah Lawrence, Pace, Wagner, Marymount Manhattan, and Montclair State -- since you appear to be looking in the tri-state are.

I believe that the following SUNY schools have strong theatre --- although many are BA programs... most of the schools on your list are BFA

Albany
Binghamton
Buffalo
Cortland
Fredonia
New Paltz
Stony Brook

Thanks KatMT! Also, would you recommend any liberal arts schools that don't require an admission that offer a drama major. I'm looking for a safety school right now that doesnt require an audition. Two that I barely know anything about are Muhlenberg and Hofstra.

3.6 gpa
SAT Scores (I'm taking them again): 1880
V:590
M:640
W:650

Worked in the childrens chorus at the Metropolitan Opera. Took part in productions such as The Magic Flute (Spirit), Queen of Spades, La Boheme, Carmen, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and others.

I also attended NYU-CAP21's pre-college summer program.

Sorry to throw that whole thing out there. I'm bloody nervous about this process.

bottomline is...which are the good liberal arts schools out there with a drama major that dont require an aud?
