Accent walls- in or out?

Sadly approaching the age when I would view parents and in laws homes and notice so many items that were shockingly out of fashion, but which they would reply, “that’s perfectly good!” I am trying to view my place with a new eye, that also involves soliciting family comments, for better and worse.

Is having one wall painted a different color in or out now?

Apparently shiny frames and matting of photos/art is now out, who knew? (well, likely many of you knew that!)

I’ve been seeing a lot of accent walls these days with wallpaper or some kind of paneling feature, vs just a different paint color.

Judging from my D who is decorating her house currently, accent walls are “in”.

A new construction house that was recently sold for $3.8M (I think…) in our ‘hood has a beautiful accent wall in MB. Some sort of textured tile material painted the same color as the other walls. The other walls have no texture. Of course we went through the house when we had an opportunity.

Wallpaper, including non permanent, seems to have made a comeback. Follow a couple of IG accounts and you’ll see what’s popular.

I’ve noticed that if I look at a lot of these, my taste does start to conform to them a bit. (Although I sense I am going to have a rebellion against whites and neutrals quite soon and do something outrageously colorful!)

I’ve seen some wood trim accent walls here in Phoenix. They have been white on white in simple patterns. Here are some examples:

Thank you for starting this thread! Very timely for me, as my wife and I are looking to remodel our master bedroom and were considering doing an accent wall.

That’s great to hear! My wife suggested using wallpaper on the “accent wall”. She had picked a beautiful color and pattern - but I just wasn’t convinced. Thought it might make the room look dated.

I think painted accent walls are kind of out of fashion, but wallpaper, wood, stone, etc… are in.

Thank goodness, I never paid to have my wall painted and now I’m in fashion, who knew? I was just simply lazy, one less decision to make, lol.

I often thought an accent wall felt like you just couldn’t commit to a color and so were only willing to give one wall some pizazz!

I follow a lot of home decor accounts and yep, wallpaper accent walls…but that doesn’t mean the other walls are white!

It’s all about the wallpaper you choose.

That sounds like me!

According to Houzz, accent wall was out as of two years ago.

If it’s “out”, does that mean it will be back “in” by the time you have the work done ?

I never base my choices on trends since as stated by @rivet2000, in a few years they will be out again. My advice is do what you want since you will be living there. I have several accent walls on a new home construction. Suits me just fine and have gotten compliments on my color choices.

They are definitely in, but not just a contrasting/complementary solid paint. As stated above, wallpaper, stone, and wood trim (think various board-n-batten patterns) are very hot right now.

Also, accent walls are easy to do/undo, so very little downside to having fun with them. Go for it!

Wainscoting with wallpaper

Depending on your taste Rifle Paper has a new wallpaper line. Pricy but pretty

My opinion…if you want to do an accent wall of any kind because you like the look….do it. The next owner can repaint or remove wallpaper. It’s not a big deal.

We are doing things to our house so that we can enjoy them…not because we are trying to guess what some future owner might like or not like. When we built this house, I had blue counters put in both upstairs bathrooms…because I like blue. It’s cheery to me. If we redo those bathrooms (very likely), I might do the same…or at the very least something I like!

Love the Rifle stuff that’s showing up all over my web ads. I feel like the almost-done-being-hot accent wall trend is barn wood. But the real beauty of an accent wall, IMO, isn’t matching a current trend but the ease with which it’s painted (or installed) and then swapped out when you’re tired of it. Painting it needs so much less than a full room’s worth of time, drop cloths, rollers/brushes, etc; amount of paint is less, and my favorite: the painstaking and overambitious paint technique (if like me you’re crazy enough to commit to it) takes way less time than 4 walls. Think 3d faux castle brick effect for a Harry Potter themed kids bedroom. Not that someone with my username would have any experience with that

Hate, hate, hate the overdone fake weathered/reclaimed wood look. To me, it screams, “Cheap flipper was here.”

Lol.

Wait. You mean it isn’t historically authentic for homesteaders of yore to use 3 walls of gypsum drywall and one wall cobbled together from that time the lightning struck the chicken coop? Next you’re going to tell me that they didn’t reuse their sliding barn doors in the house either
