I think I speak for myself, every other person in the state of Michigan, and perhaps the majority of the people on planet earth when I leap to my feet and lodge a formal protest against the assertion that The Ohio State University is in any way “sexy.”
$100K in debt means you will have to earn an additional $150K to cover the principal, plus earn an additional $10K for the first year, and less after that per year to cover the interest on the money you borrowed. If you made $75K/yr as a developer, you’d have the equivalent of a $50K/yr salary because of your loan debt.
Over 10 years, that would have financed:
An MBA at Wharton with $100K left over (which would make sense debt wise because of the huge salary increase after graduating)
A starter house in most cities.
Twice per year round the world vacations for two.
That is why everyone on the board is is discouraging you from taking on debt.
If anyone chuckles, just ask how much they’re paying. Then see which one of you chuckles.
We start kids playing sports as soon as they can walk, with the dream of that big scholarship. What would your friends (or you) think if you got a full ride to Alabama for sports? They’d be jealous as heck. So why should it be different for an academic scholarship? I’m always amazed with this. My son had a full academic scholarship at Bama. He was also captain of their volleyball team, a club sport. When people back home would ask about him, and hear he’s on full scholarship, if they thought it was for volleyball they were wowed, but if I said it was academics they seemed less impressed.
As for computer science, every job opportunity and interview will be entirely based on what you know and how you can code, not what school you attend.
I just came back on after doing homework, and thank you all so much for your posts, I’ve read them all @Chardo @TooOld4School @happy1 @Snowball City and I got a kick out of your post @moooop

If anyone else has advice and wants to post, I’ll be sure to read it in the morning, thanks in advance
Go to Alabama!
Yeah, Alabama. Be aware that those Midwestern schools u think are sexy are looked down upon by the coastal folks. I’ve lived on both coasts and the Midwest…In the Northeast & in the West they tend to see southerners AND Midwesterners as clueless rednecks in bib overalls who watch “Hee Haw” and “Green Acres” on Masterpiece Theater.
Bottom line: everybody has somebody looking down on them…Your Chicago friends look down on the south, and folks from NY , NJ, Mass., & CA look down on Chicago. And folks in Paris and London think New Yorkers are cavemen, etc. etc. Someone is laughing at you? Get used to it.
Since you are an organized person, go ahead and make reservations for move in and for parent’s weekend if your mom is going to it.
When you book your flight down, make the rest of the first semester flight reservations. Some people wait until they know their final exam schedule before booking a December flight. Just book it for the end of the last day of exams. If you wait around for a day use that time to deep clean your room, purchase local holiday presents, run laundry. Waiting until too late will have you paying a couple of hundred dollars more.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.
I feel like I will get passed over if I go to a less well known school for a guy with the same credentials but a more “sexy” degree, like one from Ohio State or U of I because they are ranked very highly in computer science. This would be my concern when applying for jobs in a competitive field like Computer Science.
Am I catastrophizing this?

Yes, you are.
You will not be passed over because another applicant went to a different school. Employers do NOT hire schools…they hire PEOPLE…based on what they’ve done. Your grades, your projects, your experiences/internships/co-ops will sell you…not a school’s name.
