Acceptance rate for theater applicants

I’m wondering the acceptance rate for theater applicants at LMU. I only applied to a handful of schools for drama, but I haven’t heard much about LMU’s stats.

Is is selective? Or is it a “take anybody” philosophy?

Thanks.

I applied for LMU’s theatre arts program and found out I was rejected today. I had a great resume from a performing arts high school, decent ACT score, but a horrible GPA. So I’m assuming academics are the first thing considered for their program. Oh well!

Hmm, that’s interesting. I assumed GPA wasn’t a huge factor in Theater admissions, even to more selective schools.

Anyone know the exact stats though?

Sorry for the late response! For admission to the LMU theatre program, you have to get admitted to LMU first. The way they review your application is that they first consider you for admission to LMU, and if you get accepted, they will then consider you for acceptance into the theatre program.

You can read more about it here http://admission.lmu.edu/apply/auditionsportfolios/theatreaudition/

Did you get accepted?

My D was accepted to the theater program and I was wondering the same thing. We visited last week and I asked the director how it works. He told me that the department views the video submissions and then gives Admissions a list of who they want. Then Admissions takes that into consideration when making their decisions. Academics seems to outweigh a recommendation from the theater dept so if a student comes in with a weak application, a recommendation from the theater department will not get them in necessarily. Conversely, if there is a student who was not recommended by the theater department the school may still accept them as a theater major if their application is strong and for some reason Admissions wants them anyway. So this means that, unlike in a BFA program, you will have students less talented. The director’s philosophy is that he is not just training actors, but audiences as well. He feels it’s a good thing for those less talented kids who will probably not make it as professional actors, to see how truly hard it is to act. Those are the future audiences. He spent a good hour and a half with him and I was very impressed. Although my D has four BFA offers she has decided to commit to LMU!
