Sorry for being so flippant about Union - I know it's tough to get into, and we're thrilled! What I meant was that her stats were pretty much in the upper level for Union, but Union of course has a low acceptance rate. Her stats are on the low end for the other "reach" schools, and they have an even lower acceptance rate.

Today's mail brought a fat envelop from Carnegie Mellon and a waitlist from Haverford. D was 6 for 6 before this, so today's auspicious for having heard from everywhere she applied! Still waiting on some financial offers/honors decisions, but at least we know where she stands on admissions.

On to decisions. Thanks for all the great info at CC!

S is all set, but my niece is waiting for six of eight schools this week. A little nerve-wracking for everyone.

I just received my acceptance letter from Wellesley. They added a handwritten note at the bottom -- "We enjoyed your essay and admire your resilience and adaptability" -- which was sweet, but the financial aid package is such that it would be impossible for me to attend. It's bittersweet, I guess. At least I'm 2/2 for acceptances with eight decisions still to come.

Congratulations, camelia. But sorry about the financial package. Fingers crossed for the right package to come (or a re-consideration of the Wellesley package if you decide that's your first choice).

Thanks. :) Wellesley gave my family a $42,000 EFC to Bryn Mawr's $22,260 (which really is still too high). Of the two, I would've chosen Wellesley, but there really is no way.

I'm going to hold my breath until the week is over... then I'll decide if I need to have a nervous breakdown.

limner - you might need an extra glass (giving you an excuse here :) )since as I compare the finaid we've gotten so far from D's schools.....they're all about the same net cost (that's the only figure I look at!), even as compared to our in-state U's.....so she can go to the UC (which she has stated is tooooo big for what she wants) or she can go to LAC....price tag is essentially the same. But, still....ouch!

Chevda - I didn't think flippancy.....I've just always thought their acceptance was pretty low....My DD basically only applied to schools that were "match" i.e. no "reaches" (and I question all this stuff anyway)...and she's got a pretty good batting average so far. But then, we were more concerned with fit rather than "name."

camelia - whoa! Such a huge difference! And I had always thought BMC would have been more generous with my D, who was accepted, but it's still gonna be a stretch if she decides to go there. Yeah, from a parent's prospective, it's still too high. Best to you. I'll do what I can for my D, but at this point, she's still undecided......arggg! I may just join your nervous breakdown.

I don't think they knew quite what to make of my family's financial situation, to be honest, though how they came up with the $42,000 figure is beyond me. This is what I posted in the "Wellesley RD" thread:

I'm not a US citizen, so we had to fill out the international CSS, whatever that's called. My family's financial situation is really bizarre and will inevitably get much worse next year, since both my parents are not only between jobs, but buying their first house (we've rented or lived in employer-sponsored housing in various countries all my life). It's a real mess. We might manage $20,000 with considerable sacrifice and debt, but $42,000? It'd be funny if it weren't so depressing. It's that unrealistic.

I'm just going to wait for notification from the other eight schools I applied to, then figure out how to negotiate.

might an accepted students visit increase the love?

Camelia

Sorry about FA, but glad you're getting the acceptances. Hope it works out!

Son just got accepted to Carleton!! I am so excited and happy!

Ohh, bethievt......Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think that's what you guys were hoping for!!!!

Here on the west coast, it's a bit awkward, since we are always the last to get the mail (e- or otherwise).

bethievt, congratulations to you and your son! That's wonderful!

Erin's Mom, he did finally come home and open the envelope. The finaid offer looks good, on par with the others (except for UMich, which is much lower than the rest--too bad we didn't know that before he wrote his honors essay).;)

Yay! You will never believe this but I was actually going to PM you bethievt! And ask because I too think this was S's first choice, no? I think Carleton is the one place I would most wish my son would attend. Dang, no ocean. But what a great place it sounds like, huh? Great academics and midwestern down to earthiness AND a little old hippieness to boot.

Hooray!!!!!!Come to Sinner's Alley and we will throw confetti for you! Beururah is the queen of beautiful congrats!

Congrats, everyone, on the acceptances so far! And I guess I mean grattis, Cameliasinensis! (having grown up in the D.C. area as a child of a Swedish immigrant, I guess I sort of identify with a little of your background).

And Bethievt, I'm so glad your son got into Carleton! I swear your anxiety is contagious, and I don't even have a child applying this year! I'm also one of those moms who REALLY wants her son to go to Carleton. I get to be anxious again next year, after taking this year off.

thank you, nceph (and everyone else, of course) :)

Thanks to all of you! I'll see you at the cafe. Yes, they have world class academics, world class quiz bowl, a Druid grove and a house designated for cookie baking. Not to mention midnight broomball and Mai Fete and the world premiere of the Caucasian Chalk Circle.

Alumother

No ocean, but 10,000 lakes!

Congratulations, bethievt! Is the twig sculpture, Twigonometry, still standing at Carleton? It was the coolest thing when we visited Northfield summer before last.

Bethie -- Yippee!! Congratulations, to both you and your son. I know how badly you wanted that Carleton acceptance. Doesn't it feel like a huge weight has lifted from your shoulders?

Camelia -- Glad to hear good news from you again. So sorry about the money, although it sounds like you should appeal. I hope more good news comes your way.

Camelia, I haven't worked in financial aid for many years (18, actually). But back when I did, that school wouldn't even process internationals for financial aid. Because of that, I didn't work with any internationals. But if I remember correctly, if they required a student visa, they had to prove that they had the money for school in the bank. I point this out only because I wonder if that may be why your BMC EFC is so high --- they may handle international F/A differently than they do domestic. I could be wrong, though. It is ALWAYS worth presenting unique situations to the F/A office! The worst they can say is no --- but the best they can say is yes --- and they can't say yes if you don't talk to them.

I already have a visa to the US, though, so I don't know if that's the issue... like I said, I'm going to wait until I have all my decisions and financial aid packages, and then decide which one(s) I should pursue.
