DS was rejected by Duke yesterday and Columbia, Yale, UPenn and UChicago today. Needless to say he is down. He has been accepted by 5 good schools so still has choices. Seems to be handling it okay.

I know this has been a tough day for many, but hang in there. At least we are all getting some resolution.

We have weathered the day fairly well. D is in at Berkeley, which she has been in love with for quite some time. She also likes USC, but was admitted there for Spring (not too excited about that), and I'm not sure how those numbers will work out anyhow. Then there's Tufts, we haven't heard anything from them yet. Those are roughly her top 3.

Luckily she is very flexible and isn't totally set on any specific school; so we can use "the numbers" (finances) for tie breakers if necessary. (for once her indecision works in my favor)

She got her first reject today (UCLA), but she never really was excited about them anyhow, and that came in after the Berkeley acceptance, so I don't think she will bat an eyelash on that one when she finds out later. funny, some of you may remember my meltdown thread about how she missed the deadline for one of UCLA's scholarships...after all it truly did not matter. I wonder if they rejected her because we skipped the tour we were signed up for tat UCLA to stay longer at USC when we were up in LA. lol..I doubt it, but it just seems odd to be in at Cal and out at UCLA..

so we are holding up well, and hoping this will all be over SOON!

congrats on all the great acceptances above!

Oh, sweetie, {{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}. I'm sorry that you received the Princeton rejection and yes, if that was your first choice school,, that will sting. I'm glad that you're allowing yourself to go ahead and feel heartbroken....no use in denying your feelings, but I'm also glad that you realize that having been accepted to Dartmouth with good finaid is such a wonderful blessing! I wish you the best on the rest of the decisions, and I'm positive that you will enjoy an enriching and exciting four years of college. GREAT job, sweetie! :)

~berurah

thank you, berurah. :) it's definitely bittersweet, but i think it'll be more than okay.

Feeling happy in our little neighborhood.....twins a few houses away... one accepted ED at Middlebury a while ago.....today her sister confirmed several wonderful acceptances including one at Harvard.....U Penn, Dartmouth... Bowdoin.....so, we are grinning in our neighborhood.....

seems like this year, the kids posting here are getting some wonderful choices... lots more mention about $$$ scholarships than a few years ago when we went thru it....so, I am very pleased to see the evolution of the informed college applicant....CC and its devotees have been a tremendous resource for sooo many..... hats off to all the seniors and all the adults who have provided wonderful guidance with their thoughful answers. CONGRATULATIONS everyone......

I'm sorry about Princeton, but I'm sure you'll learn to love Dartmouth. One of my good friends from college is the Director of Music at the church there.

mathmom--interesting you would say that. D. was rejected from MIT, and I kind of wondered since she's got all the "soft" qualities they say they want, but it actually worked out as she had been having misgivings about attending a school with a bias toward technology when she is not sure that's what she wants to do.

Harvard seems to like our high school and being a legacy I'm sure gave him a nudge too. I'm guessing at MIT and Caltech computer nerds are a dime a dozen while at Harvard he rounds at the class and he's a legacy to boot. (At least that's what I imagine is going on at the admission's office.) Certainly if MIT wants kids that don't go on crazy overload of courses and ECs they could have picked my kid and didn't. They waitlisted the girl who applied who I was sure would get in, so I think it was just a hard year as well.

Last week, my son got into his safeties, including word of a full ride at UCSC. The first half of this week was waitlists at the schools that he applied to incase he didn't get into his first choice -- matches, but not ones he was as excited by. So, waitlists at Carleton, and then today at Oberlin and Kenyon. He was starting to feel a little anxious about the schools remaining, but just after 3 PM, the magic happened, and he got an acceptance email from UChicago! It's one of his top choices, with Reed and Stanford, though these days, he's been more excited about Reed.

I'm happy that Chicago seemed to "get" him and his enthusiasm for the school, even though he couldn't visit and didn't interview.

Congrats on U. of Chicago!

U of Chicago is a great option, TrinSF......I am very pleased to see so many folks have it as a real choice this year.....lots of kids WANT to go there... so that is wonderful to see......

Chicago is a great choice. I hope he gets a chance to visit. My D is most likely going there and my S will graduate in June. If you have any questions, I might be able to help.

We can use all the help we can get making a choice among some very nice schools. S is math-oriented (just missed cutoff for USAMO; so he is good but not great!), but also with a strong leaning toward economics / finance / history. However, the core liberal arts are not his strength. (Wants to evenutally be a PhD in finance / business.) Got rejected at Stanford (EA) and waitlisted at Harvey Mudd (which he thought would be great fun). Accepted to UChicago (math/econ), CMU (Science and Humanities Scholar program, computational finance w/ Mellon college, will apply for Tepper for a 2nd major in finance proper), Michigan (pre-admit to Ross, LSA honors in math). With luck, he also will get into the Math Methods in Social Sciences program at Northwestern.

We do not qualify for need based aid, and S has received marginal merit based aid (Nat'l merit etc). So, money wise, they are all about the same (S plans to turn down a full ride at a good State school....sigh).

Question: We like all the schools where he got in, and can see good things happening to him at all 4 schools. We are leaning toward CMU but have changed our (collective) minds 10 times already in the last day or two. Is it even worthwhile talking to fin. aid people to see if anyone will put some money on the table? Help!

He's into Oberlin with a John Frederick Oberlin scholarship. I don't believe he'd have applied to so many if he thought he'd get into them all.

Well, d got waitlisted at Vassar. I don't know if she's going to to keep the spot or not, but we'll see. A couple of other things went on this week at school & dance, so she's not concentrating on Vassar.

But the good news is that, in addition to the merit scholarship at Muhlenberg ($12,500/year), she got a $1,500 dance talent scholarship.

Haven't been able to speak to her about it yet; she's out. But I'm excited!

Bethievt,
celebrate the results.......and take comfort in knowing THAT is exactly the problem with the current approach to college admissions, it "seems" so random that kids really have to flesh out a full safety, meets, reach list......all the schools overaccept.....its not like your S took spots from anyone else.....

I just wish there was a way for kids to rank their choices as they do on here.. so schools could more accurately accept who they want that also wants them......some way to slow down the quantities and really weed out where the kids want to go......

1 app per student for October consideration/November Decision
1 app per student for November consideration/December Decision
1 ED or 2 EA apps for December consideration/January Decision

hats off to all.......

Case, Ill, Mich, Caltech, MIT, Rice, WashU, Olin....UCBerkeley,Stanford. Fini....
10/10. Counselor was correct. I owe her a dinner. Decision time; Probably already made, but finalize next week. Last kid. No more fun and games.
Good luck to all.

happydance Our final decision just came in. Accepted at Reed! So, accepted at Reed and UChicago, his two top choices, with a full ride at his fav safety, UC Santa Cruz. He's visiting Chicago next week to help make the decision! He was accepted at other safeties and waitlisted at other LACs, but these were the ones that mattered to him. It's good when it works out the way you hope!

Wow ... congrats to your son, oldolddad! How was your visit to Rice?

My son was also accepted at Reed. He loved the "flash animation"--I don't even know what that is. Congratulations to everyone. We're going to bed.

Blackeyedsusan: Thanks. S liked his stay at Rice. I knew he would. He laughs at the kids who ask why someone would go to Texas. He thinks it is nicer than the Ivy schools which is one reason he did not apply to them.He likes it much more than Stanford. Really likes the attitude of the students too. (It has been interesting listening to him compare the personalities of the schools and students at all of the places he has gotten accepted to) Of course it is beautiful this time of year. I went off to visit old friends during my time there. I have always loved the area around the campus and the access to downtown. I guess the city now has the second largest number of theater seats after NYC. I have fond memories of the concerts at Miller Outdoor Theater and always have fun when I go back. Has your S decided. He has good choices too?
