I’m going to be an incoming junior this fall, and I’m still trying to decide which school to attend as a transfer. I got into Brown, and I was wondering if anyone can give me insight on the Brown transfer program. Could any transfers give me their opinion, any current Brown students, or those with friends who transferred to Brown? Are transfer students well integrated, etc? How is Brown socially? Thanks much in advance.

I have several transfer friends here. In general, they all seem to love the school and say that coming here was the greatest thing that ever happened to them. A lot of the transfers I know got very involved in groups like St Anthony Hall (a co-ed literary fraternity) or other time-consuming organizations where they made a lot of fast friends.

It might help if you told us what other school(s) you're considering, so we can give you more of a comparison. Also, "how is Brown socially?" is a pretty broad question. More specifics would help.

I actually transferred to Brown after my freshman year. At that time, there was an orientation program specifically for transfers so that we could all get to know one another prior to classes beginning. we also were all placed into dorms that had people from all classes.

did they send you material about orientation?

I'm going to be transferring too, and they haven't sent me any orientation info. Would you guys say people are still interested in building new friendships their second year as opposed to just being friendly but sticking to their "group"?

I know many transfers, they really do add a depth of experience to the campus and most of them are quite happy with their decision. Brown has a large # of transfer students so you won't be alone. If you make the effort, it will get reciprocated as a general rule.

Thanks for the replies. I've received materials from Brown, but the housing questionnaire is just the same as the incoming freshman one, and there's no specifics on dorms. Do transfers just house randomly in mixed-class dorms then or is there also a transfer dorm? How did you find the transfer orientation? Is Brown pretty clique-ish?
