ACCEPTED at Gtown which causes a problem: NEED ADVICE

Ok so I've been accepted to Gtown (the college) and I plan on studying government/political science but I dont qualify for financial aid but my parents are going through somewhat of a rough economic time.

I think I have a very good shot at the full tuition scholarship at Mcgill so it is between 56k/year versus roughyl 10k per year (because of room and board)

Any thoughts on what I should do?

Gtown ranks #4 in us for internatioal relations which I will probablly switch over too. problem is i WILL be going to grad school .100%

I don’t know the exact numbers but i did read somewhere that a fair % of McGill students get into top US universities for grad degrees. And i heard that at McGill poli sci students really benefit from the international atmosphere present at McGill, which is just as valuable as the historical and political richness of DC.

I’m not majoring in poli sci or anything so this is all i know im afraid. Good luck

Yeah I know the feeling, my family’s in the same situation financially.

I don’t know much about poli sci except that Georgetown has a very strong program. Realize this, however - if you’re going to do graduate school, undergraduate education doesn’t matter nearly as much as people think it does.

Go to McGill if you plan on grad school. You were smart and dedicated enough to get into Gtown-that means you should have no trouble pulling a 3.5+ GPA at McGill if you stay motivated. A 3.5+ GPA with some activities will get you into most grad programs and will give you a good shot at T14 law schools w/a solid LSAT. McGill is very respected by grad school adcoms.

I’m pretty critical of the school, but coming out of it I’m glad I went to McGill and not Gtown. The debt would kill me.

Unless you are incredibly, ridiculously wealthy no undergraduate degree is worth the $46k yearly difference.

In a field like IR you pretty much need graduate work anyway so my opinion is save your money, you will be so very thankful you did after you graduate.

THANKS FOR ALL THE ADVICE! it looks like ill prolly end up at mcgill and will go for free with al lthe scholarships i plan on getting.

wutangfinancial: where else did u get into besides gtown?

wow. i was at exactly the same situation last year… I was accepted into Georgetown(Business school), but with 0 FA, i chose mcgill. Tough choice!

First, before you get all excited by the prospect of switching into Gtown’s international relations program, realize that it is about as difficult for a student from the College to transfer into the School of the Foreign Service as it is for someone to get accepted to Harvard. In other words, don’t assume that you can into the SFS through the backdoor, because it probably won’t happen.

Second, don’t assume that you will win one of McGill’s $10 000 entrance scholarships. Again, that’s like assuming you will get accepted to Harvard.

Yeah, honestly, McGill’s scholarships (and generally all Canadian scholarships) are not easy to obtain. Because they are far fewer in number and therefore, much more competitive. For example, one of the University of Toronto National Scholarships had only 10 recipients. and the people that apply for these scholarships are all incredibly academically focused.

good luck though! McGill is a great school.
