Basically, instead of working or Freshman connection, could I go to a community college for one semester?
If Yes, is this a good alternative or no?

You can! It’s completely up to you. I’d talk to the College/Department you were admitted into and get their advice. Some majors have intro classes that are available through Freshman Connection but not at a Community College. Most departments are open to talking with you or have someone who works specifically with admitted students that will. What major are you?
@terpgirl CS
Hmm, I don’t personally know a lot about CS, so I’d definitely say contact someone in the Computer, Mathmatical, and Natural Sciences College. There’s definitely some benefits to doing FC, but others to community college, depends on what you want from the experience.
Freshman connection also publicizes their recommended courses based on major (I think the depts actually provide this to FC). They’re all listed at http://oes.umd.edu/freshmen-connection/academics/course-information/course-recommendations
