So I just got accepted to Access Oberlin! In December, they're flying me out for free to come visit the campus. But I'm from SoCal and I have no idea at ALL how to dress for cold. I haven't even seen snow in years. So what's the weather like around early December? How do most people dress?

Lol… it is pretty cold. Bring only long pants and long sleeved type clothes. Bring layers (long sleeved shirts, sweather, sweatshirts). You may not own a winter coat (but maybe you could borrow one from a friend?). Mittens and a hat would be VERY useful if you can wrangle those from somewhere, too. You probably won’t be climbing snowdrifts, but you will be walking outside on sidewalks that have some snow on them (shoveled, but still…). If you have some kind of hiking shoe or boot, that could be good. You could probably get along in tennis shoes if necessary, but I would leave shoes like ballet style flats or anything open toed at home. You do need to be able to walk a ways on campus in whatever you bring, though. Oberlin in general is quite casual, so don’t worry about dressing up unless they specifically tell you to bring something nice.

Thank you! And no, I don’t own a coat, hat, or mittens… guess it’s time to go ask friends or scour thrift stores. Around how cold does it usually get?

First: Congratulations!!!

Second: I just wrote out a whole thing and realized I was just rewriting everything intparent wrote, so I just want to second their advice! Average highs in December will be in the 30s or 40s with lows in the 20s, so that’s pretty cold but the dorms and all the buildings are kept really warm so you will really only have to worry about the cold in like 5 minute increments as you walk between buildings. You should also get a host, who would probably let you borrow an extra scarf or sweater if you can’t get one. I hope you have a great trip!

Thanks! We’re housed in either a dorm or co-op with a host so maybe in a pinch I can borrow something. And I’m mostly just worried that it’s going to be really cold when we take the campus tour, haha. Anyways, thanks again for the advice!
