Accepted via Early Decision but want to reapply after one gap year

Hi all,

I am an international student, and I was accepted via Early Decision by one college last year, but I took one year gap. And this year I want to get into a better college. Am I still obliged to go to the college which accepted me through ED last year? Can I reapply to other colleges?

I want the answer as soon as possible....

Thanks a lot~

You need to get in touch with that college. I doubt you will still be obliged but it is better to make sure.

I assume that after the ED decision you did not get agreement with the college to take a gap year so you could start next year. If so, you are free to do what you want. The ED acceptance applied only to your entry into college this year and has no application to next year. The college is no longer bound to admit you and you are not bound to attend.

It depends on how you went about taking the gap year. If you requested a gap year from your ED college, the college may have done what many colleges do when gap years are requested – agreed that you could take a gap year if you also promised to attend the college after your gap year. Many colleges won’t let incoming students take gap years unless the student promises to attend the college after the gap year.

So, for your most definitive answer, ask your ED college.
