Accidentally typed in my mom’s ssn wrong on fafsa?

Long story short, I accidentally typed in my mom’s ssn wrong on her fsa account so I couldn’t submit my application until the Ssn on it matched the incorrect one on her fsa id, which the website wouldn’t let me change. So, I ended up typing in the wrong digit so the ssns would match and submitted the application. Will this cause my application to be denied? Should I just create another application? I couldn’t find any way to correct the wrong ssn on her fsa id so I’m not really sure what to do next.

I would assume that the name, birthdate and soc sec number on the FSA ID will have to match what the SSA has on file. If your mom’s name doesn’t match the other information, then it will probably be rejected.

This FSA ID FAQ provides some information about updating FSA ID information if it doesn’t match with SSA. (7th question).

Try that.

But your mom is really supposed to be the one creating her FSA ID, not you.

I don’t see how it is possible. You can’t get an FSA ID with the wrong SSN (or wrong birthdate or name not matching). It will keep rejecting it, and until it matches you can’t file the FAFSA.

Without an FSA ID, you can’t submit the FAFSA. If you got a rejected FSA ID, it can take 3-7 days before you can resubmit with the correct information. The first year, I did both my daughter’s and mine with incorrect information, and it took more than 3 weeks total to get it right.

My mom’s fsa id had an error in her ssn. The fsa website wouldn’t let me fix the error in the ssn so I ended up retyping the ssn on the application to match the incorrect one from the id so I could submit it. Will I get an email soon saying that I have to fix the application or will I have to file a new one?

You need to call the fafsa helpline…and ask.

Using a wrong SSN was never going to solve this issue. First of all…that SSN could easily belong to a real person someplace else.

As noted upstream…the name, SSN and birthdate need to MATCH what is correct for your parent. Not some made up number.

Call the fafsa helpline.

Have you tried having your mom sign into the ‘Manage my FSA ID’ page?

What does the SSA match status of her FSA ID say?

Make sure you change the soc sec number on your FAFSA back to the right one.

Starting a new FAFSA won’t solve the problem. Get the FSA ID information corrected and matched to SSA.

I’m still not seeing how your mother got an FSA ID with the wrong information. I used the wrong SSN for my daughter (typo) and she could NOT file the FAFSA, couldn’t sign it, without the FAS ID. We didn’t know what the problem was (because the SSN is ******** on the application, and I thought it was her name or middle initial (she has a double first name) but as soon as I went throughthe application, reentering every number, it worked. Then to make matters worse I reversed two numbers in my birth date so had to do it all over for me. It takes 3-5 business days every time you make a mistake.

But I doubt you have filed a FAFSA with an incorrect SSN.
