Accomodation

I was just considering my options for accommodation if I were to study abroad.
[ul][]University dorms
Pros:
- Get to know more people, closer to campus, secure
Cons:
-Less privacy, limited living space
[]Sororities/Greek living
Pros:
-More social environment, close to friends
Cons:
-Not-so-studious environment?
[li]Off-campus living [/li]Pros:
-More freedom
Cons:
-Subject to availability?
[/ul]
So I was wondering if anyone had done off-campus living, either sharing with college friends, or subletting from a landlord. I'm particularly curious about the latter - staying with a local landlord? Share your experiences with a clueless rising senior :p

Not necessarily. Most unis have double or triple occupancy rooms for 1st years (eeks), but some (mainly LAC's) offer singles too.

I think it's usually recommended that freshman live in the dorms. Then during your freshman year, you can decide if you want to go greek, make off-campus living arrangements or stay in the dorms.

Less privacy in the sense that it's a shared living space/living area?

Hmm, b@r!um you have a point there but I was wondering if anyone had any insights into the various living arrangements. Such as, is renting more affordable/troublesome? You're in Bryn Mawr isit?

Renting is often less affordable (that of course depends on the neighborhood you want to live in!). My colleges charges around $12,000 for room & board and I thought that was ridiculous until I came here and saw that renting a private room anywhere near the college would be even more expensive.

And then there are inconveniences like the commute to campus (both in terms of time and money) and dealing with the landlord - which depending on the landlord can be a very pleasant or unpleasant experience. When you move into the dorms a lot of things are already set up: you get a bed and a desk, a room phone, wireless internet service, the trash is picked up every day, there are vacuum cleaners, microwaves and fridges, washers and dryers etc for students to use, the communal bathroom is kept clean by a housekeeper etc. If you rent a room, you might have to arrange for a landline or internet access yourself, you would have to buy your own furniture and equipment (you can rent a furnished room but those are really expensive!) etc.

I'll be living on campus and will have my privacy intact. The college has assigned me a room in the 4-bedroom-2-bathroom appartment, with a lobby (television, sofas, etc. r provided).

This is great!!!

I suggest you to live on campus for the freshman year (at least, the freshman semester). You'll have the feel of the surrounding by then, and can make more logical decision.

Nice jason :D I have a single with ensuite bathroom ..yay for privacy in college dorms

Definitely stay on campus during freshman year. Most people move out in 2nd/3rd year along with people they got to know in their dorms.

Single with ensuite bath! Wow, pretty sweet.

pretty sweet? Since when did you start considering dorms "sweet"? haha, never mind. Gals can only refer to rooms as 'sweet', ain't it, S33D? :D

We, guys, call it cool/ kick as$. Or any other adjective?

****ing sweet works for me :p

wow, there's some weird bug with the forum. when I post it appears before the last post, if you get what I mean. my #10 post above should have been below jason's.

maybe it's because you're in a slightly different timezone so technically i posted before you IST.
