Accompanimest?

For my college cd recording, is it better to have piano an accompanimest, or just solo?

What is your instrument?

If the piece was written to be performed with piano accompaniment, you should get an accompanist if you possibly can (especially if you are a singer).

The word is ACCOMPANIST!!

Seriously. I know that many young people do not consider spelling correctly to be important when communicating online, but you should remember that your college applications will be read by adults. Most of those adults like to see good grammar and spelling. As a potential music major, you need to know the correct pronunciation and spelling for the title of the pianist who will accompany you.

It varies by instrument (or voice) and school. Some require an accompanist, some forbid it and some leave it up to you. Check the school's web site or give them a call to find out exactly what they want, then give it to them.

I play the horn. While I know the pieces I'm playing obviously sound much better with an accompanist, I'm worried about the rates. How much do they, in general, charge for an hour?

We have paid $40 - $50 per hour for some of the better accompanists in our area, but the going rate varies from place to place. One thing you do not want to do is to hire someone who is inexpensive but not very good. If an accompanist is not required, it may be better to go without one in that case.

If possible, ask around to some horn players in your area who they are using. Accompanists often specialize in a particular instruments and know much of the major rep. If you can find someone who has played the rep before, it will save you time and money. If you live near a college or university with a music department, they might be able to recommend some pianists for you.

That being said, you should check with the schools to which you are applying if they require accompianment. They may be fine with you submitting tapes without it. Most instrumentalists audition without accompanists at most schools so it is very likely you won't need one.
