I have a year left at college, and I have to decide which track. Currently my major is Finance, but I've thought of accounting before. But then I realized I find it annoying. But then again I do have tax experience, so getting a job with accounting degree would be easier it seems. Plus I can always get a job in finance with accounting degree.

But I don't know, should I just stick with finance major? I find that more interesting. Or should I just get an accounting degree to be on the safe side...?

I'd rather work in finance than accounting anyday. Err, life sucks =/

I would try to stick with Finance and add on Accounting, especially if you don’t go to a target school (nyu, wharton, etc). Accounting will give you a really good foundation for a career in finance and getting your CPA will open many doors if you want to get into finance.

If you’re having this dilemma at the end of junior year, you’ve dug yourself into a hole. With that said, could you be more specific on your particular situation? Where have you worked/interned, what area of finance have you concentrated on so far, what are you doing this summer etc?

I have worked two seasons in taxes (Instant tax service, liberty tax) and currently I am going on over two years at a real estate property assistant manager.

Not a bad idea to double major…but my school won’t like that too much…but let’s see

I do not go to a target school, haha.

I have not dug myself a hole actually, my school works a little differently. I am at a point where I have to choose. Summer plans? Summer school I guess.

If you’re going to capitalize finance but not accounting, then:

You OBVIOUSLY prefer finance to accounting.

You won’t know when to capitalize a lease, or anything else, ergo, no strong GPA for you.

If you can, I would recommend double majoring in accounting and finance. I am going this route and pursuing a job in finance. All of the interviewers I have had were impressed with this double major and recognize that accounting is tough to maintain a good GPA in (my school requires the accounting classes to have an average GPA of 2.3-3.0 regardless of how well the students do).

Wow, seeing the word “GPA” followed by a number that isn’t 3 or greater made me throw up in my mouth. Try not to be so absent minded.
