I earned a 91 on an exam while most of the class failed. She offered students to earn half of the points back by taking another test. How is this fair to people like me who actually studied for the test?
Is this ethical? What is the purpose of a grading system if students can turn a 70 into an 85?
One purpose of tests is to determine whether the material has been mastered appropriately. It’s possible that this test was harder than the professor intended, or the material hadn’t been adequately covered, for whatever reason.
If the test had been easier to begin with, such that you got a 95 and the hypothetical 70-scorer got an 85, you’d be in exactly the same boat and none the wiser.
IMO it is very fair to all. Students who did poorly on the first exam are given an opportunity to master and demonstrate an understanding of the material (which is the point of college, isn’t it?) and can earn half the points back. By only earning half of the points back, they will still be penalized for their poor performance on the first exam.
How would you feel if the shoe was on the other foot? And do you really think the professor would fail most of the class?
Other people doing well doesn’t undermine the fact that you understand the material and did well. Move on.
Better grade, prof known you are a top student in case you ever need a recommendation, and not having to take the test twice? Those are 3 for starters.
You know that you understand the material, 2) You don’t have to study again for the next test you can use your time on other things and 3) you got full credit on the fist test instead of half credit on the re-test so your grade will be higher.
It is time to stop fretting about this and move forward.
