The ACGME has declare a Stage 3 Pandemic Emergency and offers residency programs new guidelines for the training/education/supervision of residents and fellows:
This allows
–residents and fellow to be assigned toward in areas that are not related to their specialty (basically suspends specialty training for up to 30 days, longer if the sponsoring institution requests an extension)
–allows fellows to work as core treating physicians in their underlying specialty (i.e. cardiologist bumped down to work as general internists or hospitalists)
Program must still provide residents and fellows with
– adequate PPE resources and training in their use
– supervision appropriate for the clinical circumstances
– ACGME approved work hour caps
