Huge gap between my composite and my writing score. My prep book was outdated, unbeknownst to me, so I was studying the wrong format for the essay. I do not have an opportunity to retake the test before Nov 1 deadlines.
How will this look for colleges? Will it raise a major flag, or not be that big on issue?
I got an 8 in each of the “domain” scores, if that matters. Domains: Ideas And Analysis, Development And Support, Organization, Language Use And Conventions.
My daughter got a 35 composite and a 24 on writing. Like you, she had 8s on every subsection. I have seen several other people post similar disparities between their writing scores and composite for Sept ACT. She is a Junior so she is deciding if she wants to retake it. She was thrilled to be done before the writing score came out. Our counselor did suggest that a 5 on the AP English language test may compensate for the weak writing score.
My son has an ACT of 36 with an 8 writing. He earned a 780 on the SAT written portion and a 5 in AP English. He just ran out of steam on the ACT writing. Hopefully, the 8 doesn’t hurt him. I think if your application essays are well constructed that will help too. Not everyone writes well under a time pressure.
The general consensus I’ve read on CC is you could have snuck J.K. Rowling in to write your essay and still got a 24. Hopefully, when the admission folks see this trend, they will put the onus on the ACT not the students.
