I am applying to MIT, UPenn, Brown, Columbia and Yale ( among others.. ). I plan to retake the ACT on December 9th. I checked Upenn, Brown and Columbia and they say that they accept the December scores...

Would the scores make it in time for the Jan 1st deadline if I decide to send the scores after I see them early on Dec 19th? Or do I have enter these universities at the time of registering ( which I dont want to do in case my score isnt good enough )?

If I were you, I would check again with the schools and see if the scores really have to be there by Jan. 1, or if they can accept them later. I think they must accept them later, because if you took the ACT with writing on Dec. 9 there's little chance your scores would get there by Jan. 1 even if you put the schools down when you register.

Keep in mind, though, that your scores might not be available for early viewing on Dec. 19. If you don't want to risk sending the scores too late, I would recommend putting the schools down when you register, unless someone from the school tells you they'll accept them in mid-January.
