Any useful tips please for the essay?

I need help with essay too! Any tips?

Write more than 2 pages = instant 10+

What’s the highest level English course you’ve taken?

what sanguinee said is completely wrong. I wrote about 2 and a half and only got a 8 :P

As long as your 2+ pages isn’t just filler and has some meaning to it, you should get a higher score than if you write a half-page essay. That being said, do not just start writing, hoping to fill up all the space, and end up with a terrible essay. Make sure your points are well thought-out and explained. And come back to your thesis in the last paragraph.

Also, time management is key! Practice with less time (25 minutes or so) so that you can function properly on test day.

Hope that helps!

I didn’t practice at all and got a 9. Then again, I’ve taken the AP Lang test, so that served as sufficient practice.

Read!! So that you have examples to put in. Don’t just fluff your paper with words you aren’t sure of. State your opinion clearly and truly. The more true you are with your opinion, the easier the words will flow.

Write 2.5 to 3 pages. Have a good opening sentence and thesis (3 sentences max), and have at least 3 examples (even if they are not “completely” developed) (3-4 sentences each). Offer a quick counterexample to your stance and then refute it (2 sentences max for this) in one of the 3 example paragraphs. Then write a 2-3 sentence conclusion with a catchy ending sentence that restates your thesis.
I took the ACT twice, got an 11 the first time and a perfect 12 the second.

Just got my score for December, I got a 12. I basically made sure I filled up the pages as much as I could. I followed the general, conventional pattern: strong beginning, thesis, topic sentence- think I had three paragraphs (each with a closing sentence) and a conclusion starting with the restatement of the thesis.

The examples can be very general, I think I had one personal example about a classmate, and two others I cannot seem to remember. Also it is very important to EXPLAIN your example…why did you bother mentioning it? Why does it support your thesis?

Ohh I also did a fourth, counter argument paragraph, I think. For example, what the opposition might say and counter arguing that point. Practice time management, that is the most important!

Hope that helped. Good Luck!

I’m sure that the only reason I got a 9 is because I wrote exactly two pages. I wrote a very long intro, two support paragraphs, each with strong examples (my comment said so), one counterargument and rebuttal, and one short conclusion (3 sentences). So I’m sure it was the length. I’m very happy about the 9 though. I’m a sophomore and this was my first ACT.
