lbridge, admissions is a better persron to respond to this, but I'm pretty sure they look at your highest section from each test. If you do poorly on a section, make sure to work hard on improving that section for your next exam.

When your application is evaluated, we will review all your subscores on the individual areas of the ACT, but when we calculate and report score averages and ranges we only use the composite. We are trying to assess your strengths and weaknesses in each academic core area, so if you have a great composite score but a particular area that isn't as strong, then we take an especially close look at your coursework and grades in the area of the lower score to be certain we feel you have the necessary skills to succeed in the curriculum here. If the score in math, for example, is lower than the rest of your scores, but you've done well in math and are taking calculus this year, then we're not going to worry too much about the lower score. But of course all of this is relative to just how low the score is.

Good luck and feel free to post additional questions as they arise! You are also welcome to call us during office hours and an admission officer would be happy to have a conversation with you about your credentials.

Admissions, I guess my D in physics my senior year (slacked too often, too early) was offset enough by my 36 on the science section of the ACT. Although, and this is a warning to all seniors who will be accepted by UR, I did get the dreaded letter (in JUNE!) requiring me to explain my poor grade and my official enrollment at UR was contingent upon a satisfactory explanation.

We do frown on senioritis! Keep up your good work, everyone!
