ACT Testing Wrongly Accusing Cheating

I agree, This is why we need to take the awareness to the media. ACT needs to be regulated.

No it is all by mail.

Arbitration is all by mail. They do not allow in person options. All part of their plan. It will take public awareness and the attention of media and government officials to get the ACT regulated.

I have not found one. We need EVERYONE blasting it on FB and taking this to their state representatives and media.

If you can’t question witnesses then I don’t see the point of arbitration. It sounds like a sure-lose, and you probably waive the right to appeal.

Correct. They do not allow appeals. Chances are slim but the arbitration is one more example of their corruption. I do not believe retesting will be fair at all.

TO ALL VIEWERS - use this to bring awareness!

Hi, I am currently going through the same process. I come from a family that does have the money to pay for a lawyer so any recommendations? Like the type of lawyer who got OJ Simpson free.

There are many good folks who spent a lot of time and energy sharing valuable insight.

It’s all here.

Hi Everyone.
It was very interesting to read this thread. I personally have gone through the most stress and anxiety due to the ACT. I have taken the ACT a total of four times. I have very bad testing anxiety, and in order to combat this and raise my score, I spent my entire summer tutoring and studying for the ACT. I did exceedingly well afterwards on my October ACT. However, after applying for 6 colleges I found out in March that my score was going to be questioned and potentially cancelled. I was very scared and nervous since I already had been admitted to all of the schools in which I applied for. I did lots of research about this and it seemed like most people lost their case when they submitted information to confirm a high score jump. Taking the test again for me was not an option. The ACT itself already caused me a crippling amount of anxiety and having to score the same or higher was pressure I couldn’t handle.

I decided to contact the university that I had already committed to and explained the situation. I was fortunate enough that my university was understanding and told me that all they needed was a new ACT score on hand since my application had many other great aspects to it. I’ve taken several AP courses, very involved in EC’s, above average GPA, have a job, and I am currently enrolled in all college classes for my senior year. My university told me that it was okay if my scores were going to be cancelled as long as I submitted another score for them to have on file.

I wanted to share this story because throughout all of high school I thought all colleges looked for was an ACT score. I stressed every single day thinking about it and I wanted to go to a good college. I was fournate enough that my University looked at more than just a stupid ACT score and still was honoring me acceptance. I cancelled my ACT scores and I am still able to attend my top choice. (Purdue) Now, some colleges may not be as understanding, but I wanted to let people know that if you do talk to your university directly there’s is a chance they will still admit you. Focus on ec’s, your gpa, a job, and things that will make you stand out on your application. Good luck to all!

This is a great post. Thank you!

Unless you are at risk of losing a significant scholarship I would not get an attorney. Talk to the university you have applied for. See what they say. Sow them this post on CC.

Hi I’m going through the same thing and my scores are 28 and 33(this is the score they accused). I sent letters from my English teacher, counselor, my highschool report, and personal statement and am waiting for their response but I almost gave up after reading this.
I sent my accepted school and waitlisted schools my 28 ACT today just in case.
Will colleges cancel my admission if my 33 is cancelled?? Can I change my score to 28 in commonapp and stuff??

I got accepted by Purdue and Indiana Kelley.
Can I see how you explained your situation to universities??
I would also like to do the same thing…
Thank you so much

That’s so ironic you’ve been admitted to Purdue as well! But I had my Mom call the admissions team, and she basically told them how we just found out that my score was going to be cancelled because of my high score jump. She didn’t mention why they believed this or anything like this, and told them how their school was my top choice and already was planning on commiting there already. She just tried to be very polite for the whole situation and tried to emphasize how badly I wanted to attend there. They then pulled up my file and told her I had many other things on my application going well for me and that they have faith in their students. I can’t guarantee the same will happen for you but Purdue is an awesome school that looks at their students holistically so I hope everything works out for you!

Also, all I did was send them an old score from act.org and then they updated me file with that new score.

Thank you for sharing this information. My daughter is stressed to the max over all of this. It has consumed our life since receiving the letter in February from her September ACT scores. Can I ask if the university ever received the notice of cancelling your ACT scores? I chose to arbitrate after losing the appeal but moreso to have time for her to retake the ACT. We just received the results this morning of the ACT she took at the beginning of April and they were horrible. Her anxiety and stress as I mentioned is through the roof. I actually told her she needed to go back for the June testing. At this point I feel like I am committing a form of child abuse making her take it again. I’m not so sure I want to contact the university at this point either in case there are negative consequences. I am choosing arbitration and paying my $200 in hopes of carrying this on as long as I can. It is just a sad situation that her Senior year will be remembered for these things and not for the other wonderful accomplishments she has made.

My daughter is a part of all this as well. She took the test as a Sophomore and at a point when she really didn’t care about her future in college. Over the next year she found the career path she wanted, signed up for the ACT prep class after school, I bought her an online study guide and she was able to bring her September 2017 score up to a C27, which is way more indicative of her as she is a current 3.9 student with college classes. Today is the deadline to submit her “ACT Score Review Option Sheet”. She tried to appeal it the first time and sited many of the justifications listed above and received what seems to be the same form letter of rejection from them. This all makes no sense. They say she cheated off of someone that wasn’t even in the same testing site as her as she took it in a room with only three other students !!! We had planned on appealing again but after finding this site and reading all the rejections we are thinking she will take the test. The only issue is her senior year she is not taking math or English. She switched all her classes to the nursing field and is trying to get as many college credits in that field before HS graduation. This experience has broken my daughter. Her latest comment “Mom, where does being honest and working get you? No one believes me, they don’t even know me and they are calling me a cheater and a liar.” I am not sure what to say to that. . .

“They say she cheated off of someone that wasn’t even in the same testing site as her as she took it in a room with only three other students !!!”

Unbelievable. It looks like the appeals are a total joke, but I would hold on to that fact - cheating off someone who wasn’t even in the same testing site - and use that to show colleges, if needed, if you have to resort to that.

So what’s the “magic number” of points you need to increase - or decrease - your score to be falsely labeled as a cheater?? I’m thinking it’s 5 points, which is absured.

Monty Neill is the Executive Director of Fair Test, an organization highly critical of national standardized tests.

“You are guilty until proven innocent,” says Neill. “It is sort of like the old witch trials.”

Neill says students like Danielle, regardless of their guilt or innocence, face an uphill battle against the large testing companies.

Neill says, “They are in effect the police investigator, the prosecutor, they are the judge, they are the jury, they are the appeals court and they are the executioner.”

Student lives are in the balance, but I don’t see anywhere where ACT is regulated, has any oversight or any checks and balances. We have had serious unresolved issues (100% ACT fault - not cheating related) for weeks and there is no recourse short of hiring an attorney, whatsoever. It is disgraceful.
