After reading all these posts I’m left without much hope. It breaks my heart to think I need to tell my child it is not worth fighting for and the best option is just to retest. Time is of the essence. Sounds like if we appeal the accusation we could wait months and chances of it being overturned are not in our favor. If we decide to retest what is best? Retake privately with ACT or retake during a National test date?
Anyone know the percent of appeals that are overturned?
@roycroftmom This is totally different from the run of the mill everyday test situation. Hopefully your child will never have someone imply they cheated and have to feel the pressure. The timing was inexcusable. My daughter did not cheat and goes to an elite university so I know she has the ability but ACT’s tactics are not acceptable. The information we sent proved our case, so she didn’t have to go through taking the test. Easy for you who has not been in the situation. Armchair quarterbacks always win.
@8056ah - could be incorrect but thought that for these retakes due to testing irregularities it has to be in a separate room with a special proctor. ACT sets it up. I don’t think they count any retake done during a regular administration of the test. Hopefully someone will confirm or correct that.
I agree the timing was inexcusable. Hopefully your daughter will sail through the high stakes high pressure finals at her elite university as well.
Did your child have both identical responses as well as inconsistency’s in test scores? Would love to hear what you submitted to prove innocence @JBStillFlying
^@8056ah my D didn’t get her scores flagged, and we hadn’t heard of this happening with such frequency at the time that she sat the exam. She didn’t know anyone this had happened to, unlike my son two years later who actually DID know of a few kids (but he himself took the SAT and only one time, thus by-passing any of this “irregularity” stuff). It never occurred to us a standardized test result could turn into such a nightmare. My youngest will be testing in a year or so and I’m very concerned.
Cfrn2001 I had no idea how much this site would explode whdn I started it. Like you and many others, I was fighting to defend defend the honor of my daughter, who worked so hard. Unfortunately, sll mh attempts failed. Although my daughter was not effected, since she had completed for first semester at university, she still lives with the accusations of being called a cheater.
Personally, I believe a class action lawsuit is the only hope to take action against the ACT. I wrote to all my state representative’s and Washington, however 1 voice is not enough to get the attention needed to address this growing problem.
Don’t give up!
All my best,
Wanted to thank everyone for all of the information in this thread. My daughter had her score reviewed 6 months after her test in February '19. I have to admit I was not optimistic after reading this thread. Her score went from a 24 (Dec '18) to 29. It was actually a pretty big jump in the individual areas (Dec '18 - E23,M24,R26,S24 to E24,M31,R31,S30 in Feb '19). She was being reviewed due to another test that was statistically similar and her jump in score. This was her 4th test (22,24,24,29). The test in question was the one provided by her high school during her junior year. She submitted a really nice letter detailing her character, her involvement in clubs/sports and how the classes she was in at the time really helped her prepare. We submitted a letter from one of her teachers about her character along with one from the guidance counselor who was responsible for the test delivery in February. And lastly, her transcript and a receipt of the prep class she took. I am happy to report that we just received the notice today that her test was validated.
Just wanted to let anyone know who reads this to not lose hope. We didn’t go over the top with anything and submitted what they asked for. What a relief…
