ACT Writing Score Interpretation

My friend just got their scores back for the ACT, and they got a 31 on writing, but an 11 on each subcategory - Ideas and Analysis, Development and Support, Organization, and Language Use and Conventions.

Based on my knowledge of ACT interpretation, 11 is a great score on the essay, but a 31 is a more average score. How are these two numbers related, and how do we interpret it?

Thanks!

The total score, in this case 42 points, is scaled to a 31.

This is lower scaled score than the2015/2016 test booklet indicated. On that scale a 42 would be scaled to a 33.

I wouldn’t worry about the 31. Heck, 31 is great on this new writing test! Have you seen all the <25 scores, from people who have 30+ composites?

@HereToHelpYou I was curious what the 2015/2016 practice test had. Thanks for providing that. I don’t like the way these standardized tests are scored. To me, the curve should be the SAME EVERY TIME. The difficulty in each test should be the same. The variability is ridiculous. Sometimes -2 is a 32, other times -2 is a 35. What? I doubt the difficulty was that drastic. Just make it the same, preset it, then we have a fair ground.

I agree with you, but I don’t make the test. It seems like writing is one place where a standard curve would be possible.
