@DoinResearch and congrats on another one! You are going to have some choices, which is so wonderful.
At first when son decided against BFA to all BA, I was shocked, and I doubted. But now, with some of the schools not requiring a major until the end of sophomore year, and the flexibility it gives him, I’m proud that he’s figuring this out.
@DoinResearch I’m so impressed by your son’s wisdom. What a great bunch of options he’s got!
You’re on a Roll @DoinResearch so many options and so rewarding congratulations!
@DoinResearch - that long list of acceptances & scholarships is inspiring! You’ve got a bright kid. Congrats to you all!
Thank you all! I must admit, it killed me to have him not apply to a few BFAs. He will find his way. I so enjoy reading everyone’s journeys, and I’m grateful to not feel alone. I hope, too, that anyone reading sees the many different paths. In the passing of John Mahoney this week, I learned his first acting classes occurred at the age of 37.
@DoinResearch I am so thankful to see that someone else’s kid is considering taking the road less traveled and choosing a BA over a BFA. Although my D applied to a mix of BA and BFA-audition schools, the choice is still far from clear. Like your son she has received merit and talent scholarships at the smaller LACs and less sought after programs like Illinois Wesleyan for the BFA Acting and for other BA acting schools. She also received an early offer from Elon for BFA-Acting and is thrilled (!) but Wlon doesn’t appear to award fine arts $ until mid March. Michigan is her top choice after sitting in on a class the Friday before her Unified audition. But, she is really wrestling with how important the big me school and connections are vs the sticker price. She knows there is only so much money and if she spends it all on tuition then post BFA will be rough without the nest egg she maybhave if she chooses scholarships and a smaller name school. I just discovered this board late in the game now that Chicago Unifieds are over and we are all waiting a little longer for the results our families need to make decisions. That saying that the journey is about the process and not the destination rings true this week.
@newgirl17 Elon came up big with the merit dollars for my D last year. Unfortunately she wasn’t accepted artistically. You may be pleasantly surprised
@newgirl17 Welcome! You will find lots of helpful information and some pretty nice people, too. We are all on this crazy journey together.
Welcome! @NewGirl7 Maybe we were at the same audition at IWU on 1/27? Even with Kid1 not applying to well known acting schools and going the LAC route with most applications, I figure posting is still helpful for those on the journey behind me. So far, he’s received the top talent awards for schools that have them (one more left) and that has been exciting. Waiting for all the full aid packages, and I think taking the BA route has proved to benefit us financially. I’ve gotten over my bias that BA is second tier talent, I just needed to wrestle with that a bit.
@newgirl17 @DoinResearch Those BA’s can go just as far as BFA’s (have you ever checked out well known performers with BA’s?) …Saturday the weather was so bad that we had to reschedule our IL Wesleyan audition until March 3rd but we’re still going even after all of the excitement of other schools. You never know and I happen to really like their campus and their programs. I’ve provided a nice write-up on BA’s
New on here. My D is also going the BA performance route. She wasn’t ready to give up academics for conservatory training yet and has really fallen in love with playwriting as well. So far she is in at LMU (video audition) and University of Texas (audition) both for theater/drama BA. Waiting on the rest to come in.
Welcome @gulf1609. It’s great when you are accepted into a program that you’re interested in and can just wait for your other options before you press the Enroll button Decisions are supposed to be around the corner but it feels like a slow process of pulling teeth
@actingdreams I’m with you on the pulling teeth part. Getting admissions is exciting, but tempered by the lack of a full aid package. I get more excited by the aid package arrival. All this waiting, and then, when the full picture comes in kido will have to pick the top 2 choices for admitted students day, which all seem to be scheduled on the same weekends. For planning purposes, it’s hard to wait.
Welcome! @gulf1609 Glad for another BA buddy.
@newgirl17 My daughter thought she wanted a BFA only and it wasn’t until her Emerson audition where the director explained the benefits of a BA to her was when a lightbulb went on and she gave up her admissions to her dream BFA school and is attending her backup school getting a BA. She will graduate in May and is absolutely ready to take the world by storm. There are tons of different paths to this journey. All will lead you to where you need to be.
@bisouu Is she at Drew? (can’t remember if you are the Drew parent) My son will have a skype session this week with the admissions counselor. He sent in videos for theater scholarship consideration and tried to send an email to the dept chair but it oddly bounced back. Would love to hear highlights of her Drew experience. TIA! Not his first choice path but he is embracing all avenues since you just never know the outcome!
Yes she is at Drew…I will PM you
