Activities

Why the hell are there almost 50 different sports listed, and just one "Science/Math" category? I'm in 6 or so EC's that would count as Science/Math, each of which are completely distinct. Why not just condense all the sports into "Athletics" too?

Some of the fields don't even make sense if the EC isn't a sport. "I intend to participate in college", for high school math/science competitions? Hours and weeks per year only makes sense for sports with well defined seasons and training times. Last I heard, there's no such thing as "math season".

Is this something that can be fixed, or is the common app just like this?

It just doesnt make any sense. That’s the only crappy thing about the commonapp - I thought the activities section would be structured differently… I dont think they’re going to change this any time soon…

Choose ‘Science/Math’ from the drop down. Add your title to ‘Position Held…’ Describe in the ‘Details and Accomplishments’.
Repeat x5.

It is just not possible to cover every possibility in the drop-down list and the members want to have a distinct list to sort apps into. NCAA sports just happen to be popular activities.<shrug></shrug>

It’s easier to define sports but even in the sports they are listed as JV/Varsity-our DD has never played JV in her sport, only varsity but she defined that in the honor section. For music she has 2 separate listings for musical instrument because she does marching band and jazz band, both EC’s. Which science/math activities are you in?

I imagine making each sport separate makes it easier to recruit, very important, but it seems that means colleges don’t really care about what kind of science/math you’re doing. Maybe they think Quizbowl, Science Bowl, Science Olympiad, and the science Olympiads (USA_O’s) are all the same thing?

Still, it’s not that hard to categorize math/science activities. I could probably come up with the 15 or so most popular ones in a few minutes, each of them more popular than “JV/Varsity Equestrian”. There are relatively few large competitions out there, and they’re very well defined.

You are making a big deal out of nothing. Select Science/Math, put down Science Olympiad and any honors won/positions held and move on. Our Dd could have about 12 different music categories too. They don’t want a laundry list, they want your MOST IMPORTANT activities as stated in bold in the directions.
