Hi everyone. So I'm trying to get a feel for each ivy league campus before I visit. Could someone give me some insight about the dorms, athletic facilities, weather, classes, school spirit, etc. (pretty much as much about the campus as possible).

And if possible, could someone please give me some intel about the basketball facilities? I'm hopefully going to try to play some ball here (trying to be recruited). Thanks

This is a pretty self-centered request. Look at the helpful Columbia threads, search this forum, read about Columbia on here. You’re not entitled to a treatise on Columbia. And you want insight on the weather – try [National and Local Weather Forecast, Hurricane, Radar and Report](http://www.weather.com) .

“Trying to be recruited” sounds like an oxymoron.

I am curious about the the basketball thing because i don’t get it - Columbia has a basketball court, with wood, and hoops, and a gym for athletes to train in. Second, I see you posted this same thing at the other ivies. If you don’t have the time to research on your own and ask specific questions, well, why should we be kind here. In short: you come across as a jerk here.

but in case anyone else cares - like most things, this is something you can find on the columbia website with minimal effort.

“In the summer of 2002, a brand new state-of-the-art floor was built that provides better spring and cushion for Columbia’s student-athletes. The project, a cooperative effort between Columbia University’s department of facility management and its department of physical education and intercollegiate athletics, cost nearly $1 million. The improvements include a custom floor created by J.J. Curran of Connor Flooring Systems. The custom floor features 1.5-inch boards, different from the normal 2.25-inch boards. The thinner, more tightly-packed boards provide more stability for the surface.”

Is columbia paying both of you? Admissionsgeek and c02. Because I see you on every thread and you guys are COLUMBIA graduates who must have something better to do. As for me: I’m thankful for the info you supplied.

You must not be a sports fan. Top collegiate athletic programs have world-class facilities, not just a court/field and a basic gym. Kentucky built a $30M b-ball practice facility a couple years ago, for example.

For the most part, those of us on this board who are current students or alums generally want to help people out and tell people about the great (and not so great) aspects of COLUMBIA (as you put it). Taking 5-10 minutes out of your day to browse the board and answer questions or (rightfully) berate people who ask questions without looking for their own answers is not a big commitment and should only tell you that we care about our school/alma mater.

…Of course, if anyone IS getting paid to be on here, I want to get in on that action…

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you see it), most people who want athletics to be the center of their college experience probably wouldn’t be terribly happy at Columbia. I don’t mean to knock Columbia athletics but lets face it: if you’re happiest on the court and want to play on a renowned team for a student body that fervently supports you, wouldn’t somewhere like Georgetown be better? Of course, if you primarily want a Columbia education/experience that includes some basketball, recruitment can be a nice way to get admitted!

Of course, you might want to take everything I say with a grain of salt. I’m not really a big fan of interscholastic athletics so I may be way off-base.

bored at butler is a horrible depiction of life on campus, there isn’t even any way to verify that posters go to Columbia.

and pwoods, you aren’t even at Columbia yet, perhaps you have a sibling here, but you should probably be part of the student body before you make this judgement. There is actually a decent large sports fan following (it definitely no Georgetown basketball), but a couple of games this year have been sold out and in all our home bball games there are hundreds of student fans and all at least seeming proud and ready to cheer for their team. Columbia is pretty mediocre at sports in general, but it isn’t a liberal arts college in terms of athletics, we do have D1 teams. But yes if you care a lot about being revered on campus because of your athlete status, then Columbia is certainly not the place.

This dude is “trying to be recruited” for Columbia basketball – which has a pitiful team by major college b-ball standards. Do you seriously think he can play for Georgetown or any other “renowned team” with a “student body that fervently supports” basketball? C’mon people. Common sense.

hahahah Columbia2002. Actually, I have been receiving letters from Georgetown and other pretty good D1 schools, but I honestly can’t see myself getting good enough to play there. What I’m trying to say when I say “trying to be recruited,” is that I have contacted the coach and he has arranged a meeting on campus. I’m not sure how high his interest is, but I’ll find out when I visit.

You don’t “try to get recruited”; it’s an oxymoron. You either “get recruited” or you solicit yourself.

You’d know it if Georgetown or other good D1 schools were interested in you. They’d be showing up at your games and summer leagues and talking to your coaches, not sending you form letters.
