Hi guys, I am really confused now.

Here is my background:
Double major in Math and Econ currently, and hoping to add the tired CS major.
I will be a sophomore next term.

Personally I hope to focus on actuarial exams and become an actuary first. But my mom thinks having an accounting certificate will be useful. But my professor said CFA certificate is more valuable.

I am really confused now. What should I focus now? Ant suggestion will be appreciated. And do you think its possible to work on three of them at the same time with a triple major? Thanks a lot.

Blair

I mean…you cannot say one is better than the otheR because all 3 are used in 3 very different fields. It 100% depends on what you want to do…

Want to be an actuary? Focus on the actuarial exams.

Want to be in public accounting? Take the CPA.

Want to work in finance (investments, trading)? Take the CFA.

The advice your mom and professor are giving is really quite silly. And anyways…unless you get a Masters in Accounting you won’t be eligible for the CPA anyways…

These are not certifications that people get one after the other because, as I said, all 3 are for very different fields. I have met people with combinations of these certificates, but they were definitely the exception, not the rule.

“The advice your mom and professor are giving is really quite silly. And anyways…unless you get a Masters in Accounting you won’t be eligible for the CPA anyways…”

this is not true in most, if any, states.

Blair,

do what you want to do. workingatbig4 is right, they are very different. u’d be crazy to take all three. But really? You are not even a softmore yet! don’t be focusing on any of these exams yet. triple major? what a joke. You can have fun at college too. Stop stressing.

My suggestion don’t even start thinking about these exams yet for awhile. Relax and lighten up, go get drunk. 2 majors is enough, don’t pick up a 3rd. Especially since you’re not even a sophmore yet and probably don’t know how hard your majors are gonna get once you get past beginning and gen ed courses…

In HIS case it is true in ALL states. He makes zero mention of taking any accounting classes. Since all states require at least 24 credits of accounting he’d have to get the MAcc.

^ yeah, you’re probably right. Or he could quadruple major. :)

You can’t even start the CFA until your senior year anyway… you probably want to stop taking career advice from these sources immediately.
